Judges 13 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

Philistines Oppress Again

(cf. Num 6:1–21 )

Now the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 again^H3254 did^H6213 evil^H7451 in the sight^H5869 of the LORD^H3068, and the LORD^H3068 handed^H5414^H3027 them over^H5414 to the Philistines^H6430 for forty^H705 years^H8141.

Jdg 13:2

And there was a man^H376 of Zorah^H6881, of the family^H4940 of the Danites^H1839, whose name^H8034 was Manoah^H4495; and his wife^H802 was infertile^H6135 and had not given^H3205 birth^H3205 to any children.

Jdg 13:3

Jdg 13:3Then the angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, “Behold now, you are infertile and have not given birth; but you will conceive and give birth to a son.

Jdg 13:4

Jdg 13:4“And now, be careful not to drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any [fn]unclean thing.

Jdg 13:5

Jdg 13:5“For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and no razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he will begin to save Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”

Jdg 13:6

Jdg 13:6Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome. So I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he tell me his name.

Jdg 13:7

Jdg 13:7“But he said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive and give birth to a son, and now you shall not drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any [fn]unclean thing, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’”

Jdg 13:8

Then Manoah^H4495 pleaded^H6279 with the LORD^H3068 and said^H559, “Lord^H136, please^H4994 let the man^H376 of God^H430 whom^H834 You have sent^H7971 come^H935 to us again^H5750 so that he may teach^H3384 us what^H4100 we are to do^H6213 for the boy^H5288 who is to be born^H3205.”

Jdg 13:9

Jdg 13:9And God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field, but Manoah her husband was not with her.

Jdg 13:10

Jdg 13:10So the woman hurried and ran, and told her [fn]husband, “Behold, the man who [fn]came the other day has appeared to me!”

Jdg 13:11

Jdg 13:11So Manoah got up and followed his wife, and when he came to the man he said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to the woman?” And he said, “I am.”

Jdg 13:12

Jdg 13:12Then Manoah said, “Now when your words [fn]are fulfilled, what shall be the boy’s way of life and his vocation?”

Jdg 13:13

Jdg 13:13And the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “The woman shall pay attention [fn]to all that I said.

Jdg 13:14

Jdg 13:14“She shall not eat anything that comes from the vine nor drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; she shall keep all that I commanded.”

Jdg 13:15

Then Manoah^H4495 said^H559 to the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068, “Please^H4994 let us detain^H6113 you so that we may prepare^H6213 a young^H1423^H5795 goat^H1423^H5795 for you.”

Jdg 13:16

Jdg 13:16But the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “Though you detain me, I will not eat your [fn]food, but if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD.” For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the LORD.

Jdg 13:17

Jdg 13:17And Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “What is your name, so that when your words [fn]are fulfilled, we may honor you?”

Jdg 13:18

Jdg 13:18But the angel of the LORD said to him, “Why do you ask my name, for it is [fn]wonderful?”

Jdg 13:19

Jdg 13:19So Manoah took the young goat along with the grain offering and offered it on the rock to the LORD; and He performed wonders while Manoah and his wife looked on.

Jdg 13:20

Jdg 13:20For it came about when the flame went up from the altar toward heaven, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the ground.

Jdg 13:21

Now the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 did not appear^H7200 to Manoah^H4495 or his wife^H802 again^H3254^H5750. Then^H227 Manoah^H4495 knew^H3045 that he was the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068.

Jdg 13:22

Jdg 13:22So Manoah said to his wife, “We will certainly die, for we have seen God.”

Jdg 13:23

Jdg 13:23But his wife said to him, “If the LORD had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have let us hear things like this at this time.”

Jdg 13:24

So the woman^H802 gave^H3205 birth^H3205 to a son^H1121, and named^H7121^H8034 him Samson^H8123; and the child^H5288 grew^H1431 up^H1431 and the LORD^H3068 blessed^H1288 him.

Jdg 13:25

Jdg 13:25And the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him when he was in [fn]Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
