The Testing of Your Faith

To the twelve^G1427 tribes^G5443 who^G3588 are [fn]dispersed^G1290 abroad: Greetings^G5463.

Consider^G2233 it all^G3956 joy^G5479, my brothers^G80 and sisters, when^G3752 you encounter^G4045 various^G4164 [fn]trials^G3986,

Jas 1:3

Jas 1:3knowing that the testing of your faith produces [fn]endurance.

Jas 1:4

Jas 1:4And let [fn]endurance have its perfect [fn]result, so that you may be [fn]perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Jas 1:5

But if^G1487 any^G5100 of you lacks^G3007 wisdom^G4678, let him ask^G154 of God^G2316, who gives^G1325 to all^G3956 generously^G574 and [fn]without^G3361 reproach^G3679, and it will be given^G1325 to him.

Jas 1:6

Jas 1:6But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

Jas 1:7

Jas 1:7For that person ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord,

Jas 1:8

Jas 1:8being a [fn]double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Jas 1:9

Now^G1161 the brother^G80 or sister of humble^G5011 circumstances is to glory^G2744 in his high^G5311 position^G5311;

Jas 1:10

Jas 1:10but the rich person is to glory in his [fn]humiliation, because like [fn]flowering grass he will pass away.

Jas 1:11

Jas 1:11For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so also the rich person, in the midst of his pursuits, will die out.

Jas 1:12

Blessed^G3107 is a man^G435 who^G3739 perseveres^G5278 under trial^G3986; for once he has [fn]been^G1096 approved^G1384, he will receive^G2983 the crown^G4735 of life^G2222 which^G3739 the Lord has promised^G1861 to those^G3588 who love^G25 Him.

Jas 1:13

Jas 1:13No one is to say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted [fn]by God”; for God cannot be tempted [fn]by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

Jas 1:14

Jas 1:14But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

Jas 1:15

Jas 1:15Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it has run its course, brings forth death.

Jas 1:16

Jas 1:16Do not be [fn]deceived, my beloved brothers and sisters.

Jas 1:17

Jas 1:17Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or [fn]shifting shadow.

Jas 1:18

Jas 1:18In the exercise of His will He gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would be [fn]a kind of first fruits [fn]among His creatures.

Jas 1:19

[fn]You know^G6063 this, my beloved^G27 brothers^G80 and sisters. Now everyone^G3956^G444 must be quick^G5036 to hear^G191, slow^G1021 to speak^G2980, and slow^G1021 to anger^G3709;

Jas 1:20

Jas 1:20for a man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness of God.

Jas 1:21

Jas 1:21Therefore, ridding yourselves of all filthiness and all [fn]that remains of wickedness, in [fn]humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

Jas 1:22

Jas 1:22But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves.

Jas 1:23

Jas 1:23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his [fn]natural face in a mirror;

Jas 1:24

Jas 1:24for once he has looked at himself and gone away, [fn]he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.

Jas 1:25

Jas 1:25But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but [fn]an active doer, this person will be blessed in [fn]what he does.

Jas 1:26

If^G1487 anyone^G5100 thinks^G1380 himself to be religious^G2357, yet does not [fn]bridle^G5468 his tongue^G1100 but deceives^G538 his own heart^G2588, this^G3778 person’s^G3778 religion^G2356 is worthless^G3152.

Jas 1:27

Jas 1:27Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained [fn]by the world.
