The Old and the New

(cf. Exo 25:10–40 )

Now^G3767 even^G2532 the first^G4413 covenant had^G2192 regulations^G1345 for divine^G2999 worship^G2999 and the earthly^G2886 sanctuary^G40.

Heb 9:2

Heb 9:2For a [fn]tabernacle was equipped, the [fn]outer sanctuary, in which were the lampstand, the table, and the [fn]sacred bread; this is called the Holy Place.

Heb 9:3

Heb 9:3Behind the second veil there was a [fn]tabernacle which is called the Most Holy Place,

Heb 9:4

Heb 9:4having a golden [fn]altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the manna, Aaron’s staff which budded, and the tablets of the covenant;

Heb 9:5

Heb 9:5and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the [fn]atoning cover; but about these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Heb 9:6

Now^G1161 when these^G3778 things^G3778 have been so^G3779 prepared^G2680, the priests^G2409 are continually^G1223^G3956 entering^G1524 the [fn]outer^G4413 [fn]tabernacle^G4633, performing^G2005 the divine^G2999 worship^G2999,

Heb 9:7

Heb 9:7but into the second, only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the [fn]sins of the people committed in ignorance.

Heb 9:8

Heb 9:8The Holy Spirit is signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the [fn]outer tabernacle is still standing,

Heb 9:9

Heb 9:9which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience,

Heb 9:10

Heb 9:10since they relate only to food, drink, and various washings, regulations for the [fn]body imposed until a time of reformation.

Heb 9:11

But when Christ^G5547 appeared^G3854 as a high^G749 priest^G749 of the good^G18 things^G18 [fn]having come^G1096, He entered through^G1223 the greater^G3173 and more^G5046 perfect^G5046 [fn]tabernacle^G4633, not made^G5499 by^G5499 hands^G5499, that is, not of this^G3778 creation^G2937;

Heb 9:12

Heb 9:12and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all time, [fn]having obtained eternal redemption.

Heb 9:13

Heb 9:13For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the [fn]ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the [fn]cleansing of the flesh,

Heb 9:14

Heb 9:14how much more will the blood of Christ, who through [fn]the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Heb 9:15

For this^G3778 reason^G1223 He is the mediator^G3316 of a new^G2537 covenant^G1242, so^G3704 that^G3704, since a death^G2288 has taken^G1096 place^G1096 for the redemption^G629 of the violations^G3847 that were committed under^G1909 the first^G4413 covenant^G1242, those^G3588 who have been called^G2564 may receive^G2983 the promise^G1860 of the eternal^G166 inheritance^G2817.

Heb 9:16

Heb 9:16For where there is a [fn]covenant, there must of necessity [fn]be the death of the one who made it.

Heb 9:17

Heb 9:17For a [fn]covenant is valid only when people are dead, [fn]for it is never in force while the one who made it lives.

Heb 9:18

Heb 9:18Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.

Heb 9:19

Heb 9:19For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,

Heb 9:20

Heb 9:20saying, “THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU.”

Heb 9:21

Heb 9:21And in the same way he sprinkled both the [fn]tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood.

Heb 9:22

Heb 9:22And almost all things are cleansed with blood, according to the Law, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Heb 9:23

Therefore^G3767 it was necessary^G318 for the copies^G5262 of the things in the heavens^G3772 to be cleansed^G2511 with these^G3778 things^G3778, but the heavenly^G2032 things^G2032 themselves^G846 with better^G2909 sacrifices^G2378 than^G3844 these^G3778.

Heb 9:24

Heb 9:24For Christ did not enter a holy place made by hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

Heb 9:25

Heb 9:25nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year by year with blood that is not his own.

Heb 9:26

Heb 9:26Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been revealed to put away sin [fn]by the sacrifice of Himself.

Heb 9:27

Heb 9:27And just as it is destined for people to die once, and after this comes judgment,

Heb 9:28

Heb 9:28so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
