Covenant of the Rainbow

Then God^H430 blessed^H1288 Noah^H5146 and his sons^H1121, and said^H559 to them, “Be^H6509 fruitful^H6509 and multiply^H7235, and fill^H4390 the earth^H776.

Gen 9:2

Gen 9:2“The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every animal of the earth and on every bird of the sky; on everything that crawls on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea. They are handed over to you.

Gen 9:3

Gen 9:3“Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I have given everything to you, as I gave the green plant.

Gen 9:4

Gen 9:4“But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

Gen 9:5

Gen 9:5“I certainly will require [fn]your lifeblood; [fn]from every animal I will require it. And [fn]from every person, [fn]from every man as his brother I will require the life of a person.

Gen 9:6

“Whoever sheds^H8210 human^H120 blood^H1818,

By man^H120 his blood^H1818 shall be shed^H8210,

For in the image^H6754 of God^H430

He made^H6213 mankind^H120.

Gen 9:7

“As for you, be^H6509 fruitful^H6509 and multiply^H7235;

[fn]Populate^H8317 the earth^H776 abundantly^H8317 and multiply^H7235 in it.”

Gen 9:8

Then God^H430 spoke^H559 to Noah^H5146 and to his sons^H1121 with him, saying^H559,

Gen 9:9

Gen 9:9“Now behold, I Myself am establishing My covenant with you, and with your [fn]descendants after you;

Gen 9:10

Gen 9:10and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the livestock, and every animal of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, every animal of the earth.

Gen 9:11

Gen 9:11“I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be eliminated by the waters of a flood, nor shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

Gen 9:12

Gen 9:12God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for [fn]all future generations;

Gen 9:13

Gen 9:13I have set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall [fn]serve as a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.

Gen 9:14

Gen 9:14“It shall come about, when I make a cloud appear over the earth, that the rainbow will be seen in the cloud,

Gen 9:15

Gen 9:15and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.

Gen 9:16

Gen 9:16“When the rainbow is in the cloud, then I will look at it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

Gen 9:17

Gen 9:17And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Gen 9:18

Now the sons^H1121 of Noah^H5146 who came^H3318 out^H3318 of the ark^H8392 were Shem^H8035, Ham^H2526, and Japheth^H3315; and Ham^H2526 was the father^H1 of Canaan^H3667.

Gen 9:19

Gen 9:19These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was [fn]populated.

Gen 9:20

Then Noah^H5146 began^H2490 [fn]farming^H376^H127 and planted^H5193 a vineyard^H3754.

Gen 9:21

Gen 9:21He drank some of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent.

Gen 9:22

Gen 9:22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.

Gen 9:23

Gen 9:23But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it on both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were [fn]turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness.

Gen 9:24

Gen 9:24When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him.

Gen 9:25

Gen 9:25So he said,

“Cursed^H779 be Canaan^H3667;

[fn]A servant^H5650 of servants^H5650

He shall be to his brothers^H251.”

Gen 9:26

He also said^H559,

“Blessed^H1288 be the LORD^H3068,

The God^H430 of Shem^H8035;

And may Canaan^H3667 be [fn]his servant^H5650.

Gen 9:27

“May God^H430 enlarge^H6601 Japheth^H3315,

And may he live^H7931 in the tents^H168 of Shem^H8035;

And may Canaan^H3667 be [fn]his servant^H5650.”

Gen 9:28

Noah^H5146 lived^H2421 350^H7969^H3967^H2572 years^H8141 after^H310 the flood^H3999.

Gen 9:29

Gen 9:29So all the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.
