Jacob Is Buried

Then Joseph^H3130 fell^H5307 on his father’s^H1 face^H6440, and wept^H1058 over^H5921 him and kissed^H5401 him.

Gen 50:2Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.

Gen 50:3Now forty days were [fn]required for [fn]it, for [fn]such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.

Gen 50:4

When the days^H3117 of [fn]mourning^H1068 for him were^H5674 past^H5674, Joseph^H3130 spoke^H1696 to the household^H1004 of Pharaoh^H6547, saying^H559, “If^H518 now^H4994 I have found^H4672 favor^H2580 in your sight^H5869, please^H4994 speak^H1696 [fn]to Pharaoh^H6547, saying^H559,

Gen 50:5

Gen 50:5‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now then, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’”

Gen 50:6

Gen 50:6Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

Gen 50:7

So Joseph^H3130 went^H5927 up^H5927 to bury^H6912 his father^H1, and with him went^H5927 up^H5927 all^H3605 the servants^H5650 of Pharaoh^H6547, the elders^H2205 of his household^H1004 and all^H3605 the elders^H2205 of the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714,

Gen 50:8

Gen 50:8and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen.

Gen 50:9

Gen 50:9Chariots with teams of horses also went up with him; and it was a very great company.

Gen 50:10

Gen 50:10When they came to the [fn]threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they mourned there with a very great and [fn]sorrowful lamentation; and he [fn]observed seven days of mourning for his father.

Gen 50:11

Gen 50:11Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at [fn]the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a [fn]grievous [fn]mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named [fn]Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

Burial at Machpelah

Gen 50:12

Gen 50:12And so his sons did for him as he had commanded them;

Gen 50:13

Gen 50:13for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah opposite Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a [fn]burial site from Ephron the Hittite.

Gen 50:14

Gen 50:14And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

Gen 50:15

When Joseph’s^H3130 brothers^H251 had seen^H7200 that their father^H1 was dead^H4191, they said^H559, “What if Joseph^H3130 holds^H7852 a^H7852 grudge^H7852 against^H7852 us and pays^H7725 us back^H7725 in^H7725 full^H7725 for all^H3605 the wrong^H7451 which^H834 we did^H1580 to him!”

Gen 50:16

Gen 50:16So they sent instructions to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded us before he died, saying,

Gen 50:17

Gen 50:17‘This is what you shall say to Joseph: “Please forgive, I beg you, the offense of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ And now, please forgive the offense of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

Gen 50:18

Gen 50:18Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

Gen 50:19

Gen 50:19But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place?

Gen 50:20

Gen 50:20“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about [fn]this present result, to keep many people alive.

Gen 50:21

Gen 50:21“So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke [fn]kindly to them.

Death of Joseph

Gen 50:22

Now Joseph^H3130 stayed^H3427 in Egypt^H4714, he and his father’s^H1 household^H1004, and Joseph^H3130 lived^H2421 110^H3967^H6235 years^H8141.

Gen 50:23

Gen 50:23Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees.

Gen 50:24

Gen 50:24Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will assuredly [fn]take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He [fn]promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”

Gen 50:25

Gen 50:25Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will assuredly [fn]take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here.”

Gen 50:26

Gen 50:26So Joseph died at the age of 110 years; and they embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.
