The Treachery of Jacob’s Sons

Now Dinah^H1783 the daughter^H1323 of Leah^H3812, whom^H834 she had borne^H3205 to Jacob^H3290, went^H3318 out^H3318 to [fn]visit^H7200 the daughters^H1323 of the land^H776.

Gen 34:2

Gen 34:2When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her and raped her.

Gen 34:3

Gen 34:3But [fn]he was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and [fn]spoke tenderly to her.

Gen 34:4

Gen 34:4So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”

Gen 34:5

Gen 34:5Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob said nothing until they came in.

Gen 34:6

Gen 34:6Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.

Gen 34:7

Gen 34:7Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard about it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a [fn]disgraceful thing in Israel by [fn]sleeping with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.

Gen 34:8

But Hamor^H2544 spoke^H1696 with them, saying^H559, “The soul^H5315 of my son^H1121 Shechem^H7927 longs^H2836 for your daughter^H1323; please^H4994 give^H5414 her to him [fn]in marriage^H802.

Gen 34:9

Gen 34:9“And intermarry with us; give your daughters to us and take our daughters for yourselves.

Gen 34:10

Gen 34:10“So you will live with us, and the land shall be [fn]open to you; live and trade in it and acquire property in it.”

Gen 34:11

Gen 34:11Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your sight, and I will give whatever you tell me.

Gen 34:12

Gen 34:12“Demand of me ever so much bridal payment and gift, and I will give whatever you tell me; but give me the girl [fn]in marriage.”

Gen 34:13

But Jacob’s^H3290 sons^H1121 answered^H6030^H1696 Shechem^H7927 and his father^H1 Hamor^H2544 with deceit^H4820, because^H834 he had defiled^H2930 their sister^H269 Dinah^H1783.

Gen 34:14

Gen 34:14They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, that is, give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us.

Gen 34:15

Gen 34:15“Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you will become like us, in that every male of you will be circumcised,

Gen 34:16

Gen 34:16then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people.

Gen 34:17

Gen 34:17“But if you do not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.”

Gen 34:18

Now their words^H1697 seemed^H3190 [fn]reasonable^H3190 to Hamor^H2544 and Shechem^H7927, Hamor’s^H2544 son^H1121.

Gen 34:19

Gen 34:19The young man did not delay to do [fn]this, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. Now he was more respected than all the household of his father.

Gen 34:20

Gen 34:20So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the people of their city, saying,

Gen 34:21

Gen 34:21“These men are [fn]friendly to us; therefore let them live in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is [fn]large enough for them. We will take their daughters [fn]in marriage, and give our daughters to them.

Gen 34:22

Gen 34:22“Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised.

Gen 34:23

Gen 34:23“Will their livestock and their property and all their animals not be ours? Let’s just consent to them, and they will live with us.”

Gen 34:24

Gen 34:24All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

Gen 34:25

Now it came^H1961 about^H1961 on the third^H7992 day^H3117, when they were^H3510 in^H3510 pain^H3510, that two^H8147 of Jacob’s^H3290 sons^H1121—Simeon^H8095 and Levi^H3878, Dinah’s^H1783 brothers^H251—each^H376 took^H3947 his sword^H2719 and came^H935 upon the city^H5892 undetected^H983, and killed^H2026 every^H3605 male^H2145.

Gen 34:26

Gen 34:26They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and left.

Gen 34:27

Gen 34:27Jacob’s sons came upon those killed and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister.

Gen 34:28

Gen 34:28They took their flocks, their herds, and their donkeys, and that which was in the city and that which was in the field;

Gen 34:29

Gen 34:29and they captured and looted all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives, even everything that was in the houses.

Gen 34:30

Gen 34:30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me repulsive among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and [fn]since my men are few in number, they will band together against me and [fn]attack me, and I will be destroyed, I and my household!”

Gen 34:31

Gen 34:31But they said, “Should he [fn]treat our sister like a prostitute?”
