Jacob Meets Esau

Then Jacob^H3290 raised^H5375 his eyes^H5869 and looked^H7200, and behold^H2009, Esau^H6215 was coming^H935, and four^H702 hundred^H3967 men^H376 with him. So he divided^H2673 the children^H3206 [fn]among^H5921 Leah^H3812 and Rachel^H7354, and the two^H8147 slave^H8198 women^H8198.

Gen 33:2

Gen 33:2He put the slave women and their children [fn]in front, and Leah and her children [fn]next, and Rachel and Joseph [fn]last.

Gen 33:3

Gen 33:3But he himself passed on ahead of them and bowed down to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

Then Esau^H6215 ran^H7323 to meet^H7122 him and embraced^H2263 him, and fell^H5307 on his neck^H6677 and kissed^H5401 him, and they wept^H1058.

Gen 33:5

Gen 33:5He raised his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, “[fn]Who are these with you?” So he said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”

Gen 33:6

Gen 33:6Then the slave women came forward [fn]with their children, and they bowed down.

Gen 33:7And Leah likewise came forward with her children, and they bowed down; and afterward Joseph came forward with Rachel, and they bowed down.

Gen 33:8

Gen 33:8And he said, “What do you mean by all this company which I have met?” And he said, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.”

Gen 33:9But Esau said, “I have plenty, my brother; let what you have be your own.”

Gen 33:10

Gen 33:10Jacob said, “No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then accept my gift from my hand, [fn]for I see your face as one sees the face of God, and you have received me favorably.

Gen 33:11

Gen 33:11“Please accept my [fn]gift which has been brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me and because I have [fn]plenty.” So he urged him, and he accepted it.

Gen 33:12

Then [fn]Esau said^H559, “Let’s journey^H5265 on^H5265 and go^H1980, and I will go^H1980 ahead^H5048 of you.”

Gen 33:13

Gen 33:13But he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are frail and that the flocks and herds that are nursing are [fn]a matter of concern to me. And if they are driven hard just one day, all the flocks will die.

Gen 33:14

Gen 33:14“Please let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will proceed at my leisure, at the pace of the cattle that are ahead of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord at Seir.”

Gen 33:15

Then Esau^H6215 said^H559, “Please^H4994 let me leave^H3322 with you some^H4480 of the people^H5971 who^H834 are with me.” But he said^H559, “[fn]What^H4100 need is there? Let me find^H4672 favor^H2580 in the sight^H5869 of my lord^H113.”

Gen 33:16

Gen 33:16So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

Gen 33:17

Gen 33:17But Jacob journeyed to [fn]Succoth, and built for himself a house and made booths for his livestock; therefore the place is named Succoth.

Gen 33:18

Now Jacob^H3290 came^H935 safely^H8003 to the city^H5892 of Shechem^H7927, which^H834 is in the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667, when he came^H935 from Paddan-aram^H6307, and camped^H2583 before^H6440 the city^H5892.

Gen 33:19

Gen 33:19He bought the plot of land where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred [fn]pieces of money.

Gen 33:20

Gen 33:20Then he erected there an altar and called it [fn]El-Elohe-Israel.
