Jacob Is Sent Away

So Isaac^H3327 called^H7121 Jacob^H3290 and blessed^H1288 him and commanded^H6680 him, [fn]saying to him, “You shall not take^H3947 a wife^H802 from the daughters^H1323 of Canaan^H3667.

Gen 28:2

Gen 28:2“Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.

Gen 28:3

Gen 28:3“May [fn]God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a multitude of peoples.

Gen 28:4

Gen 28:4“May He also give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your [fn]descendants with you, so that you may possess the land where you live as a stranger, which God gave to Abraham.”

Gen 28:5

Gen 28:5Then Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Gen 28:6

Now Esau^H6215 saw^H7200 that Isaac^H3327 had blessed^H1288 Jacob^H3290 and sent^H7971 him away^H7971 to Paddan-aram^H6307 to take^H3947 to himself a wife^H802 from there^H8033, and that when he blessed^H1288 him he commanded^H6680 him, saying^H559, “You shall not take^H3947 a wife^H802 from the daughters^H1323 of Canaan^H3667,”

Gen 28:7

Gen 28:7and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Paddan-aram.

Gen 28:8

Gen 28:8So Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan displeased [fn]his father Isaac;

Gen 28:9

Gen 28:9and Esau went to Ishmael, and [fn]married, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth.

Jacob’s Dream

Gen 28:10

Then Jacob^H3290 departed^H3318 from Beersheba^H884 and went^H1980 toward Haran^H2771.

Gen 28:11

Gen 28:11And he [fn]happened upon a [fn]particular place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and made it a support for his head, and lay down in that place.

Gen 28:12

Gen 28:12And he had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

Gen 28:13

Gen 28:13Then behold, the LORD was standing [fn]above it and said, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your [fn]descendants.

Gen 28:14

Gen 28:14“Your [fn]descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will [fn]spread out to the west and to the east, and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your [fn]descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Gen 28:15

Gen 28:15“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have [fn]promised you.”

Gen 28:16

Gen 28:16Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “The LORD is certainly in this place, and I did not know it!”

Gen 28:17

Gen 28:17And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”

Gen 28:18

So Jacob^H3290 got^H7925 up^H7925 early^H7925 in the morning^H1242, and took^H3947 the stone^H68 that he had placed^H7760 as a support^H4763 for^H4763 his head^H4763, and set^H7760 it up^H7760 as a memorial^H4676 stone^H4676, and poured^H3332 oil^H8081 on its top^H7218.

Gen 28:19

Gen 28:19Then he named that place [fn]Bethel; but [fn]previously the name of the city had been Luz.

Gen 28:20

Gen 28:20Jacob also made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I [fn]take, and give me [fn]food to eat and garments to wear,

Gen 28:21

Gen 28:21and I return to my father’s house in [fn]safety, then the LORD will be my God.

Gen 28:22

Gen 28:22“And this stone, which I have set up as a memorial stone, will be God’s house, and of everything that You give me I will assuredly give a tenth to You.”
