Water in the Rock

(Num 20:1–13 )

Then all^H3605 the congregation^H5712 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 journeyed^H5265 by [fn]stages^H4550 from the wilderness^H4057 of Sin^H5512, according^H5921 to the [fn]command^H6310 of the LORD^H3068, and camped^H2583 at Rephidim^H7508, and there^H369 was^H369 no^H369 water^H4325 for the people^H5971 to drink^H8354.

Exo 17:2

Exo 17:2So the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water so that we may drink!” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?”

Exo 17:3

Exo 17:3But the people were thirsty for water there; and [fn]they grumbled against Moses and said, “Why is it that you have brought us up from Egypt, to kill [fn]us and [fn]our children and [fn]our livestock with thirst?”

Exo 17:4

Exo 17:4So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, “What am I to do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!”

Exo 17:5

Exo 17:5Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

Exo 17:6

Exo 17:6“Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Exo 17:7

Exo 17:7Then he named the place [fn]Massah and [fn]Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us, or not?”

Miraculous Battle against Amalek

(Gen 14:7; Num 13:29; 14:25 )

Exo 17:8

Then Amalek^H6002 came^H935 and fought^H3898 against^H5973 Israel^H3478 at Rephidim^H7508.

Exo 17:9

Exo 17:9So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”

Exo 17:10

Exo 17:10Joshua did just as Moses [fn]told him, [fn]and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

Exo 17:11

Exo 17:11So it came about, when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed; but when he let his hand [fn]down, Amalek prevailed.

Exo 17:12

Exo 17:12And Moses’ hands were heavy. So they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. So his hands were steady until the sun set.

Exo 17:13

Exo 17:13And Joshua [fn]defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Exo 17:14

Then the LORD^H3068 said^H559 to Moses^H4872, “Write^H3789 this^H2088 in [fn]a book^H5612 as a memorial^H2146 and [fn]recite^H7760^H241 it to Joshua^H3091, [fn]that I will utterly^H4229 wipe^H4229 out^H4229 the memory^H2143 of Amalek^H6002 from under^H8478 heaven^H8064.”

Exo 17:15

Exo 17:15And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD is My Banner;

Exo 17:16

Exo 17:16and he said, “[fn]Because the LORD has sworn, the LORD will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
