Ecclesiastes 9 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

People Are in the Hand of God

For I have taken^H5414 all^H3605 this^H2088 to my heart^H3820, even to [fn]examine^H952 [fn]it all^H3605, that righteous^H6662 people^H6662, wise^H2450 people^H2450, and their deeds^H5652 are in the hand^H3027 of God^H430. People^H120 do not know^H3045 whether^H1571 it will be love^H160 or^H1571 hatred^H8135; anything^H3605 [fn]awaits^H6440 them.

Ecc 9:2

It is the same^H834 for all^H3605. There is one^H259 fate^H4745 for the righteous^H6662 and for the wicked^H7563; for the good^H2896, for the clean^H2889 and the unclean^H2931; for the person who offers^H2076 a^H2076 sacrifice^H2076 and for the one who^H834 does not sacrifice^H2076. As the good^H2896 person^H2896 is, so is the sinner^H2398; the one who swears^H7650 an oath is just as the one who [fn]is afraid^H3372 to swear an oath^H7621.

Ecc 9:3

Ecc 9:3This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun, that there is one fate for everyone. Furthermore, the hearts of the sons of mankind are full of evil, and insanity is in their hearts throughout their lives. Afterward they go to the dead.

Ecc 9:4

Ecc 9:4For whoever is joined to all the living, there is hope; for better a live dog, than a dead lion.

Ecc 9:5

Ecc 9:5For the living know that they will die; but the dead do not know anything, nor do they have a reward any longer, for their memory is forgotten.

Ecc 9:6

Ecc 9:6Indeed their love, their hate, and their zeal have already perished, and they will no longer have a share in all that is done under the sun.

Ecc 9:7

Go^H1980 then, eat^H398 your bread^H3899 in happiness^H8057, and drink^H8354 your wine^H3196 with a cheerful^H2896 heart^H3820; for God^H430 has already^H3528 approved^H7521 your works^H4639.

Ecc 9:8

Ecc 9:8See that your clothes are white all the time, and that there is no lack of oil on your head.

Ecc 9:9

Ecc 9:9 [fn]Enjoy life with the wife whom you love all the days of your futile life which He has given you under the sun, [fn]all the days of your futility; for this is your reward in life and in your work which you have labored under the sun.

Whatever Your Hand Finds to Do

Ecc 9:10

Whatever^H3605^H834 your hand^H3027 finds^H4672 to do^H6213, do^H6213 it with all your might^H3581; for there^H369 is^H369 no^H369 activity^H4639, planning^H2803, knowledge^H1847, or wisdom^H2451 in Sheol^H7585 where^H834^H8033 you are going^H1980.

Ecc 9:11

I again^H7725 saw^H7200 under^H8478 the sun^H8121 that the race^H4793 is not to the swift^H7031 and the battle^H4421 is not to the warriors^H1368, and neither^H1571^H3808 is bread^H3899 to the wise^H2450 nor^H3808^H1571 wealth^H6239 to the discerning^H995, nor^H3808^H1571 favor^H2580 to the skillful^H3045; for time^H6256 and chance^H6294 overtake^H7136 them all^H3605.

Ecc 9:12

Ecc 9:12For indeed, a person does not know his time: like fish that are caught in a treacherous net and birds caught in a snare, so the sons of mankind are ensnared at an evil time when it suddenly falls on them.

Ecc 9:13

This^H2090 too^H1571 I saw^H7200 as wisdom^H2451 under^H8478 the sun^H8121, and [fn]it impressed^H1419 me:

Ecc 9:14

Ecc 9:14there was a small city with few men in it, and a great king came to it, surrounded it, and constructed large siegeworks against it.

Ecc 9:15

Ecc 9:15But there was found in it a poor wise man, and he [fn]saved the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.

Ecc 9:16

Ecc 9:16So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the wisdom of the poor man is despised, and his words are [fn]ignored.

Ecc 9:17

Ecc 9:17The words of the wise heard in calm are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools.

Ecc 9:18

Ecc 9:18Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.
