The Futility of Life

There^H3426 is^H3426 an evil^H7451 which^H834 I have seen^H7200 under^H8478 the sun^H8121, and it is widespread^H7227 [fn]among^H5921 mankind^H120:

Ecc 6:2

Ecc 6:2a person to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honor, so that his soul lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God has not given him the opportunity to [fn]enjoy these things, but a foreigner [fn]enjoys them. This is futility and a severe affliction.

Ecc 6:3If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, however many [fn]they may be, but his soul is not satisfied with good things and he does not even have a proper burial, then I say, “Better the miscarriage than he,

Ecc 6:4

Ecc 6:4for a miscarriage comes in futility and goes into darkness; and its name is covered in darkness.

Ecc 6:5

Ecc 6:5“It has not even seen the sun nor does it know it; yet [fn]it is better off than that man.

Ecc 6:6

Ecc 6:6“Even if the man lives a thousand years twice, but does not see good things—do not all go to one and the same place?”

Ecc 6:7

All^H3605 a person’s^H120 labor^H5999 is for his mouth^H6310, and yet^H1571 [fn]his appetite^H5315 is not [fn]satisfied^H4390.

Ecc 6:8

Ecc 6:8For what advantage does the wise person have over the fool? What does the poor person have, knowing how to walk before the living?

Ecc 6:9

Ecc 6:9What the eyes see is better than what the soul [fn]desires. This too is futility and striving after wind.

Ecc 6:10

Whatever^H4100^H7945 exists^H1961 has already^H3528 been named^H7121^H8034, and it is known^H3045 what^H834 man^H120 is; for he cannot^H3201^H3808 dispute^H1777 with the [fn]one who^H7945 is mightier^H8623 than^H4480 he is.

Ecc 6:11

Ecc 6:11For there are many words which increase futility. What then is the advantage to a person?

Ecc 6:12

Ecc 6:12For who knows what is good for a person during his lifetime, during the few [fn]years of his futile life? He will [fn]spend them like a shadow. For who can tell a person what will happen after him under the sun?
