Deuteronomy 4 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

Israel Urged to Obey God’s Law

“Now^H6258, Israel^H3478, listen^H8085 to the statutes^H2706 and the judgments^H4941 which^H834 I am teaching^H3925 you to perform^H6213, so^H4616 that^H4616 you will live^H2421 and go^H935 in^H935 and take^H3423 possession^H3423 of the land^H776 which^H834 the LORD^H3068, the God^H430 of your fathers^H1, is giving^H5414 you.

Deu 4:2

Deu 4:2“You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, so that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I am commanding you.

Deu 4:3

Deu 4:3“Your eyes have seen what the LORD has done in the case of Baal-peor, for all the men who followed Baal-peor, the LORD your God has destroyed [fn]them from among you.

Deu 4:4

Deu 4:4“But you who clung to the LORD your God are alive today, every one of you.

Deu 4:5

“See^H7200, I have taught^H3925 you statutes^H2706 and judgments^H4941 just^H834 as^H834 the LORD^H3068 my God^H430 commanded^H6680 me, that you are to do^H6213 these^H3651 things^H3651 in the land^H776 where^H834^H8033 you are entering^H935 to take^H3423 possession^H3423 of it.

Deu 4:6

Deu 4:6“So keep and do them, for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’

Deu 4:7

Deu 4:7“For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the LORD our God whenever we call on Him?

Deu 4:8

Deu 4:8“Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole Law which I am setting before you today?

Deu 4:9

“Only^H7534 be^H8104 careful^H8104 for yourself and watch^H8104 over^H8104 your soul^H5315 diligently^H3966, so^H6435 that^H6435 you do not^H6435 forget^H7911 the things^H1697 which^H834 your eyes^H5869 have seen^H7200 and they do not^H6435 depart^H5493 from^H5493 your heart^H3824 all^H3605 the days^H3117 of your life^H2416; but make^H3045 them known^H3045 to your sons^H1121 and your grandsons^H1121.

Deu 4:10

Deu 4:10“Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, ‘Assemble the people to Me, that I may have them hear My words so that they may learn to [fn]fear Me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.’

Deu 4:11

Deu 4:11“You came forward and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire to the heart of the heavens: darkness, cloud, and thick gloom.

Deu 4:12

Deu 4:12“Then the LORD spoke to you from the midst of the fire; you heard the sound of words, but you saw no form—there was only a voice.

Deu 4:13

Deu 4:13“So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten [fn]Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.

Deu 4:14

Deu 4:14“The LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, so that you would perform them in the land where you are going over to take possession of it.

Deu 4:15

“So be^H8104 very^H3966 careful^H8104 [fn]yourselves^H5315, since^H3588 you did not see^H7200 any^H3605 form^H8544 on the day^H3117 the LORD^H3068 spoke^H1696 to you at Horeb^H2722 from the midst^H8432 of the fire^H784,

Deu 4:16

Deu 4:16so that you do not act corruptly and make a carved image for yourselves in the form of any figure, a representation of male or female,

Deu 4:17

Deu 4:17a representation of any animal that is on the earth, a representation of any winged bird that flies in the sky,

Deu 4:18

Deu 4:18a representation of anything that crawls on the ground, or a representation of any fish that is in the water below the earth.

Deu 4:19

Deu 4:19“And be careful not to raise your eyes to heaven and look at the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the heavenly [fn]lights, and allow yourself to be drawn away and worship them and serve them, things which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.

Deu 4:20

Deu 4:20“But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, from Egypt, to be a people of His own possession, as today.

Deu 4:21

“Now the LORD^H3068 was angry^H599 with me on your account^H1697, and He swore^H7650 that I would not cross^H5674 the Jordan^H3383, and that I would not enter^H935 the good^H2896 land^H776 which^H834 the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 is giving^H5414 you as an inheritance^H5159.

Deu 4:22

Deu 4:22“For I am going to die in this land; I am not crossing the Jordan, but you are going to cross, and you will take possession of this good land.

Deu 4:23

Deu 4:23“So be careful [fn]yourselves, that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a carved image in the form of anything against which the LORD your God has commanded you.

Deu 4:24

Deu 4:24“For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Deu 4:25

“When^H3588 you father^H3205 children^H1121 and have [fn]grandchildren^H1121, and you grow^H3462 old^H3462 in the land^H776, and you act^H7843 corruptly^H7843, and make^H6213 [fn]an idol^H6459 in the form^H8544 of anything^H3605, and do^H6213 what^H7451 is^H7451 evil^H7451 in the sight^H5869 of the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 to provoke^H3707 Him to^H3707 anger^H3707,

Deu 4:26

Deu 4:26I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that you will certainly perish quickly from the land where you are going over the Jordan to take possession of it. You will not [fn]live long on it, but will be utterly destroyed.

Deu 4:27

Deu 4:27“The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD drives you.

Deu 4:28

Deu 4:28“There you will serve gods, the work of human hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear, nor eat nor smell anything.

Deu 4:29

Deu 4:29“But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.

Deu 4:30

Deu 4:30“When you are in distress and all these things happen to you, in the latter days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.

Deu 4:31

Deu 4:31“For the LORD your God is a compassionate God; He will not abandon you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.

Deu 4:32

“Indeed^H3588, ask^H7592 now^H4994 about the earlier^H7223 days^H3117 that were [fn]before^H6440 your time, since^H4480 the day^H3117 that God^H430 created^H1254 [fn]mankind^H120 on the earth^H776, and inquire from one end^H7097 of the heavens^H8064 to the other^H7097^H8064. Has anything been done^H1961 like this^H2088 great^H1419 thing^H1697, or^H176 has anything been heard^H8085 like^H3644 it?

Deu 4:33

Deu 4:33“Has any people heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard it, and survived?

Deu 4:34

Deu 4:34“Or has a god ventured to go to take for himself a nation from within another nation by trials, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, [fn]just as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

Deu 4:35

Deu 4:35“You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD, He is God; there is no other besides Him.

Deu 4:36

Deu 4:36“Out of the heavens He let you hear His voice to discipline you; and on earth He let you see His great fire, and you heard His words from the midst of the fire.

Deu 4:37

Deu 4:37“Because He loved your fathers, He chose [fn]their descendants after them. And He [fn]personally brought you from Egypt by His great power,

Deu 4:38

Deu 4:38driving out from before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in and to give you their land as an inheritance, as it is today.

Deu 4:39

Deu 4:39“Therefore know today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.

Deu 4:40

Deu 4:40“So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am [fn]giving you today, so that it may go well for you and for your children after you, and that you may [fn]live long on the land which the LORD your God is giving you for all time.”

Deu 4:41

Then^H227 Moses^H4872 set^H914 apart^H914 three^H7969 cities^H5892 across^H5676 the Jordan^H3383 to the [fn]east^H4217^H8121,

Deu 4:42

Deu 4:42for [fn]one to flee there who unintentionally killed his neighbor, without having hatred for him in time past; and by fleeing to one of these cities he might live:

Deu 4:43

Deu 4:43Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.

Deu 4:44

Now this^H2088 is the Law^H8451 which^H834 Moses^H4872 set^H7760 before^H6440 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478;

Deu 4:45

Deu 4:45these are the testimonies and the statutes, and the ordinances which Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, when they came out of Egypt,

Deu 4:46

Deu 4:46across the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon, whom Moses and the sons of Israel [fn]defeated when they came out of Egypt.

Deu 4:47

Deu 4:47And they took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were across the Jordan to the [fn]east,

Deu 4:48

Deu 4:48from Aroer, which is on the edge of the [fn]Valley of Arnon, even as far as Mount Sion (that is, Hermon),

Deu 4:49

Deu 4:49with all the Arabah across the Jordan to the east, even as far as the sea of the Arabah, [fn]at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah.
