Deuteronomy 18 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

Portion for the Levites

“The Levitical^H3881 priests^H3548, the whole^H3605 tribe^H7626 of Levi^H3878, shall not have^H1961 a portion^H2506 or inheritance^H5159 with Israel^H3478; they shall eat^H398 the LORD’S^H3068 offerings^H801 by^H801 fire^H801 and His [fn]property^H5159.

Deu 18:2

Deu 18:2“They shall not have an inheritance among their countrymen; the LORD is their inheritance, as He [fn]promised them.

Deu 18:3

“Now this^H2088 shall be the priests’^H3548 portion^H4941 from the people^H5971, from those who offer^H2076 a sacrifice^H2077, either^H518 an ox^H7794 or^H518 a sheep^H7716: they shall give^H5414 the priest^H3548 the shoulder^H2220, the two^H3895 cheeks^H3895, and the stomach^H6896.

Deu 18:4

Deu 18:4“You shall give him the first fruits of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the first fleece of your sheep.

Deu 18:5

Deu 18:5“For the LORD your God has chosen him and his sons from all your tribes, to stand to serve in the name of the LORD always.

Deu 18:6

“Now if^H3588 a Levite^H3881 comes^H935 from any^H259 of your [fn]towns^H8179 throughout^H4480^H3605 Israel^H3478 where^H834^H8033 he resides^H1481, and he comes^H935 [fn]whenever^H3605 he desires^H185 to the place^H4725 which^H834 the LORD^H3068 chooses^H977,

Deu 18:7

Deu 18:7then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God, like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.

Deu 18:8

Deu 18:8“They shall eat [fn]equal portions, except for what they receive from the sale of their fathers’ estates.

“When^H3588 you enter^H935 the land^H776 which^H834 the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 is giving^H5414 you, you shall not learn^H3925 to [fn]imitate^H6213 the detestable^H8441 things^H8441 of those^H1992 nations^H1471.

Deu 18:10

Deu 18:10“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, a soothsayer, one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,

Deu 18:11

Deu 18:11or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who consults the dead.

Deu 18:12

Deu 18:12“For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God is going to drive them out before you.

Deu 18:13

Deu 18:13“You are to be blameless before the LORD your God.

Deu 18:14

Deu 18:14“For these nations, which you are going to dispossess, listen to soothsayers and diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so.

Deu 18:15

“The LORD^H3068 your God^H430 will raise^H6965 up^H6965 for you a prophet^H5030 like^H3644 me from among^H7130 you, from your countrymen^H251; to him you shall listen^H8085.

Deu 18:16

Deu 18:16“This is in accordance with everything that you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Do not let me hear the voice of the LORD my God again, and do not let me see this great fire anymore, or I will die!’

Deu 18:17

Deu 18:17“And the LORD said to me, ‘They have [fn]spoken well.

Deu 18:18

Deu 18:18‘I will raise up for them a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them everything that I command him.

Deu 18:19

Deu 18:19‘And it shall come about that whoever does not listen to My words which he speaks in My name, I Myself will [fn]require it of him.

Deu 18:20

Deu 18:20‘But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name, a word which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, [fn]that prophet shall die.’

Deu 18:21

Deu 18:21“And if you say in your heart, ‘How will we recognize the word which the LORD has not spoken?’

Deu 18:22

Deu 18:22“When the prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, and the thing does not happen or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you are not to be afraid of him.
