Deuteronomy 15 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

The Sabbatical Year

(Exo 21:1–11; Lev 25:1–7 )

“At the end^H7093 of every seven^H7651 years^H8141 you shall [fn]grant^H6213 a release^H8059 of^H8059 debts^H8059.

Deu 15:2“And this is the regulation for the release of debts: every creditor is to forgive what he has loaned to his neighbor; he shall not require it of his neighbor and his brother, because the LORD’S release has been proclaimed.

Deu 15:3

Deu 15:3“From a foreigner you may require it, but your hand shall [fn]forgive whatever of yours is with your brother.

Deu 15:4

Deu 15:4“However, there will be no poor among you, since the LORD will certainly bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess,

Deu 15:5

Deu 15:5if only you listen obediently to the voice of the LORD your God, to [fn]follow carefully all this commandment which I am commanding you today.

Deu 15:6

Deu 15:6“For the LORD your God will have blessed you just as He has promised you, and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you.

Deu 15:7

“If^H3588 there is a poor^H34 person^H34 among you, one^H259 of your brothers^H251, in any^H259 of your [fn]towns^H8179 in your land^H776 which^H834 the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 is giving^H5414 you, you shall not harden^H553 your heart^H3824, nor^H3808 close^H7092 your hand^H3027 from your poor^H34 brother^H251;

Deu 15:8

Deu 15:8but you shall fully open your hand to him, and generously lend him enough for his need in whatever he lacks.

Deu 15:9

Deu 15:9“Be careful that there is no mean-spirited [fn]thought in your heart, [fn]such as, ‘The seventh year, the year of release of debts, is near,’ and your eye is malicious toward your poor brother, and you give him nothing; then he may cry out to the LORD against you, and it will be a sin in you.

Deu 15:10

Deu 15:10“You shall generously give to him, and your heart shall not be [fn]grudging when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your work, and in all [fn]your undertakings.

Deu 15:11

Deu 15:11“For the poor will not cease [fn]to exist in the land; therefore I am commanding you, saying, ‘You shall fully open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.’

Deu 15:12

“If^H3588 your fellow^H251 countryman^H251, a Hebrew^H5680 man^H5680 or^H176 woman^H5680, is sold^H4376 to you, then he shall serve^H5647 you for six^H8337 years^H8141, but in the seventh^H7637 year^H8141 you shall set^H7971 him [fn]free^H2670.

Deu 15:13

Deu 15:13“And when you set him [fn]free, you shall not send him away empty-handed.

Deu 15:14

Deu 15:14“You shall give generously to him from your flock, your threshing floor, and from your wine vat; you shall give to him as the LORD your God has blessed you.

Deu 15:15

Deu 15:15“And you are to remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you; therefore I am commanding [fn]this of you today.

Deu 15:16

Deu 15:16“But it shall come about, if he says to you, ‘I will not leave you,’ because he loves you and your household, since he is doing well with you,

Deu 15:17

Deu 15:17then you shall take an [fn]awl and pierce it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your servant permanently. You shall also do the same to your female slave.

Deu 15:18

“It shall not seem^H7185 difficult^H7185 for you when you set^H7971 him [fn]free^H2670, because^H3588 he has given^H5647 you six^H8337 years^H8141 with double^H4932 the [fn]service^H7939 of a hired^H7916 worker^H7916; so the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 will bless^H1288 you in whatever^H3605^H834 you do^H6213.

Deu 15:19

“You shall consecrate^H6942 to the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 all^H3605 the firstborn^H1060 males^H2145 that are born^H3205 in your herd^H1241 and in your flock^H6629; you shall not work^H5647 with the firstborn^H1060 of your herd^H7794, nor^H3808 shear^H1494 the firstborn^H1060 of your flock^H6629.

Deu 15:20

Deu 15:20“You and your household shall eat it every year before the LORD your God in the place which the LORD chooses.

Deu 15:21

Deu 15:21“But if it has any impairment, such as a limp, or blindness, or any serious impairment, you shall not sacrifice it to the LORD your God.

Deu 15:22

Deu 15:22“You shall eat it within your gates; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as a gazelle or a deer.

Deu 15:23

Deu 15:23“Only you shall not eat its blood; you are to pour it out on the ground like water.
