Deuteronomy 13 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

Reject Idolatry

“[fn]If^H3588 a prophet^H5030 or^H176 a dreamer^H2492 of dreams^H2472 arises^H6965 among^H7130 you and gives^H5414 you a sign^H226 or^H176 a wonder^H4159,

Deu 13:2

Deu 13:2and the sign or the wonder comes true, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let’s follow other gods (whom you have not known) and let’s serve them,’

Deu 13:3

Deu 13:3you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Deu 13:4

Deu 13:4“You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.

Deu 13:5

Deu 13:5“But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken falsely against the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of [fn]slavery, to drive you from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall eliminate the evil from among you.

Deu 13:6

“If^H3588 your brother^H251, your mother’s^H517 son^H1121, or^H176 your son^H1121 or^H176 daughter^H1323, or^H176 the wife^H802 [fn]you cherish^H2436, or^H176 your friend^H7453 who^H834 is like your own soul^H5315, entices^H5496 you secretly^H5643, saying^H559, ‘Let’s go^H1980 and serve^H5647 other^H312 gods^H430’ (whom^H834 neither^H3808 you nor^H3808 your fathers^H1 have known^H3045,

Deu 13:7

Deu 13:7of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near you, or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other end),

Deu 13:8

Deu 13:8you shall not consent to him or listen to him; and your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him.

Deu 13:9

Deu 13:9“Instead, you shall most certainly kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people.

Deu 13:10

Deu 13:10“So you shall stone him [fn]to death, because he has attempted to drive you away from the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [fn]slavery.

Deu 13:11

Deu 13:11“Then all Israel will hear about it and be afraid, and will not do such a wicked thing among you again.

Deu 13:12

“If^H3588 you hear^H8085 in one^H259 of your cities^H5892, which^H834 the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 is giving^H5414 you to live^H3427 in, anyone saying^H559 that

Deu 13:13

Deu 13:13some worthless men have gone out from among you and have seduced the inhabitants of their city, saying, ‘Let’s go and serve other gods’ (whom you have not known),

Deu 13:14

Deu 13:14then you shall investigate, search out, and inquire thoroughly. And if it is true and the matter is certain that this abomination has been committed among you,

Deu 13:15

Deu 13:15you shall most certainly strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword. [fn]Utterly destroy it and all who are in it and its cattle, with the edge of the sword.

Deu 13:16

Deu 13:16“Then you shall gather all its plunder into the middle of its public square, and burn the city and all its plunder with fire as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God; and it shall be a [fn]ruin forever. It shall never be rebuilt.

Deu 13:17

Deu 13:17“Nothing at all from what is designated for destruction is to cling to your hand, in order that the LORD may turn from His burning anger and show mercy to you, and have compassion on you and make you increase, just as He has sworn to your fathers,

Deu 13:18

Deu 13:18 [fn]if you will listen to the voice of the LORD your God, [fn]keeping all His commandments which I am commanding you today, [fn]and doing what is right in the sight of the LORD your God.
