Peter’s Arrest and Deliverance

Now^G1161 about^G2596 that time^G2540 [fn]Herod^G2264 the king^G935 laid^G1911 hands^G5495 on^G1911 some^G5100 who^G3588 belonged^G575 to the church^G1577, to do^G2559 them harm^G2559.

Act 12:2

Act 12:2And he had James the brother of John executed with a sword.

Act 12:3

Act 12:3When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter as well. (Now these were [fn]the days of Unleavened Bread.)

Act 12:4

Act 12:4When he had arrested him, he put him in prison, turning him over to four [fn]squads of soldiers to guard him, intending only after the Passover to bring him before the people.

Act 12:5

Act 12:5So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made to God [fn]intensely by the church.

Act 12:6

On [fn]the very^G1565 night^G3571 when^G3753 Herod^G2264 was^G3195 about^G3195 to^G3195 bring^G4254 him forward^G4254, Peter^G4074 was sleeping^G2837 between^G3342 two^G1417 soldiers^G4757, bound^G1210 with two^G1417 chains^G254, and guards^G5441 in front^G4253 of the door^G2374 were watching^G5083 over^G5083 the prison^G5438.

Act 12:7

Act 12:7And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly stood near Peter, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter’s side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And his chains fell off his hands.

Act 12:8

Act 12:8And the angel said to him, “Put on your belt and [fn]strap on your sandals.” And he did so. And he *said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”

Act 12:9

Act 12:9And he went out and continued to follow, and yet he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.

Act 12:10

Act 12:10Now when they had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened for them by itself; and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.

Act 12:11

Act 12:11When Peter came [fn]to himself, he said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent forth His angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all [fn]that the Jewish people were expecting.”

Act 12:12

Act 12:12And when he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John, who was also called Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.

Act 12:13

Act 12:13When he knocked at the door of the gate, a slave woman named Rhoda came to answer.

Act 12:14

Act 12:14When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gate.

Act 12:15

Act 12:15They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They said, “It is his angel.”

Act 12:16

Act 12:16But Peter continued knocking; and when they had opened the door, they saw him and were amazed.

Act 12:17

Act 12:17But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said, “Report these things to [fn]James and the brothers.” Then he left and went to another place.

Act 12:18

Now^G1161 when day^G2250 came^G1096, there was no^G3756 small^G3641 disturbance^G5017 among^G1722 the soldiers^G4757 as to [fn]what^G5101 could have become^G1096 of Peter^G4074.

Act 12:19

Act 12:19When Herod had searched for him and had not found him, he examined the guards and ordered that they be led away to execution. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and was spending time there.

Act 12:20

Now^G1161 he was very^G2371 angry^G2371 with the people of Tyre^G5183 and Sidon^G4606; and with one^G3661 mind^G3661 they came^G3918 to him, and having won^G3982 over^G3982 Blastus^G986 the king’s^G935 chamberlain^G1909^G2846, they were asking^G154 for peace^G1515, because^G1223 their country^G5561 was supported^G5142 with grain from the king’s^G937 country.

Act 12:21

Act 12:21On an appointed day, after putting on his royal apparel, Herod took his seat on the [fn]rostrum and began delivering an address to them.

Act 12:22

Act 12:22The people repeatedly cried out, “The voice of a god and not of a man!”

Act 12:23

Act 12:23And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and [fn]died.

Act 12:24

But the word^G3056 of the Lord^G2962 continued to grow^G837 and to be multiplied^G4129.

Act 12:25

And Barnabas^G921 and Saul^G4569 returned^G5290 when they had fulfilled^G4137 their [fn]mission^G1248 to Jerusalem^G2419, taking^G4838 along^G4838 with them John^G2491, who was also called^G1941 Mark^G3138.
