Introduction

Act 1:2

Act 1:2until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had given orders [fn]by the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen.

Act 1:3

Act 1:3To [fn]these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of things regarding the kingdom of God.

Act 1:4

Act 1:4 [fn]Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for [fn]what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;

Act 1:5

Act 1:5for John baptized [fn]with water, but you will be baptized [fn]with the Holy Spirit [fn]not many days from now.”

Act 1:6

So^G3767, when they had come^G4905 together^G4905, they began asking^G2065 Him, saying^G3004, “Lord^G2962, is it at this^G3778 time^G5550 that You are restoring^G600 the kingdom^G932 to Israel^G2474?”

Act 1:7

Act 1:7But He said to them, “It is not for you to know periods of time or appointed times which the Father has set by His own authority;

Act 1:8

Act 1:8but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.”

The Ascension

Act 1:9

Act 1:9And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight.

Act 1:10

Act 1:10And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, then behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them,

Act 1:11

Act 1:11and they said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room

Act 1:12

Then^G5119 they returned^G5290 to Jerusalem^G2419 from the [fn]mountain^G3735 called^G2564 [fn]Olivet^G1638, which^G3739 is near^G1451 Jerusalem^G2419, a [fn]Sabbath^G4521 day’s journey^G3598 away.

Act 1:13

Act 1:13When they had entered the city, they went up to the upstairs room where they were staying, that is, Peter, John, [fn]James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, [fn]James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the [fn]son of [fn]James.

Act 1:14

Act 1:14All these were continually devoting themselves with one [fn]mind to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

Act 1:15

[fn]At this^G3778 time^G2250 Peter^G4074 stood^G450 up^G450 among^G3319 the brothers^G80 and sisters (a group^G3793 of about^G5613 120^G1540^G1501 [fn]people^G3686 was there together^G1909^G3588^G846), and said^G3004,

Act 1:16

Act 1:16“[fn]Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

Act 1:17

Act 1:17“For he was counted among us and received his share in this ministry.”

Act 1:18

Act 1:18(Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.

Act 1:19

Act 1:19And it became known to all the residents of Jerusalem; as a result that field was called Hakeldama in their own language, that is, Field of Blood.)

Act 1:20

Act 1:20“For it is written in the book of Psalms:

‘MAY HIS RESIDENCE^G1886 BE MADE^G1096 DESOLATE^G2048,

AND MAY THERE BE NONE^G3361 LIVING^G2730 IN IT’;

and,

‘MAY ANOTHER^G2087 TAKE^G2983 HIS [fn]OFFICE^G1984.’

Act 1:21

“Therefore^G3767 it is necessary^G1163 that of the men^G435 who have accompanied^G4905 us all^G3956 the time^G5550 that the Lord^G2962 Jesus^G2424 went^G1525 in^G1525 and out^G1831 [fn]among^G1909 us—

Act 1:22

Act 1:22beginning [fn]with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

Act 1:23

Act 1:23So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and Matthias.

Act 1:24

Act 1:24And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen

Act 1:25

Act 1:25to [fn]occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

Act 1:26

Act 1:26And they [fn]drew lots for them, and the lot fell [fn]to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.
