The Census Taken

(1Ch 21:1–6 )

Now the anger^H639 of the LORD^H3068 burned^H2734 against Israel^H3478 again^H3254, and He incited^H5496 David^H1732 against them to say^H559, “Go^H1980, count^H4487 Israel^H3478 and Judah^H3063.”

2Sa 24:2

2Sa 24:2So the king said to Joab the commander of the army, who was with him, “Roam about now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and conduct a census of the people, so that I may know the number of the people.”

2Sa 24:3

2Sa 24:3But Joab said to the king, “May the LORD your God add to the people a hundred times as many as they are, while the eyes of my lord the king can still see; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?”

2Sa 24:4

2Sa 24:4Nevertheless, the king’s order prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army left the presence of the king to conduct a census of the people of Israel.

2Sa 24:5

2Sa 24:5They crossed the Jordan and camped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the Valley of Gad and toward Jazer.

2Sa 24:6Then they came to Gilead and to [fn]the land of Tahtim-hodshi, and they came to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon,

2Sa 24:7then they came to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and of the Canaanites, and they went out to the south of Judah, to Beersheba.

2Sa 24:8

2Sa 24:8So when they had roamed about through the whole land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

2Sa 24:9And Joab gave the number of the census of the people to the king: in Israel there were eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

2Sa 24:10

Now David’s^H1732 heart^H3820 [fn]troubled^H5221 him after^H310^H3651 he had counted^H5608 the people^H5971. So David^H1732 said^H559 to the LORD^H3068, “I have sinned^H2398 greatly^H3966 in what^H834 I have done^H6213. But now^H6258, LORD^H3068, please^H4994 [fn]overlook^H5674 the guilt^H5771 of Your servant^H5650, for I have acted^H5528 very^H3966 foolishly^H5528.”

2Sa 24:11When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD came to Gad the prophet, David’s seer, saying,

2Sa 24:12

2Sa 24:12“Go and speak to David, ‘This is what the LORD says: “I am imposing upon you three choices; choose for yourself one of them, and I will do it to you.”’”

2Sa 24:13

2Sa 24:13So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee for three months before your enemies while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days of plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.”

2Sa 24:14

2Sa 24:14Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us now fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”

Plague Sent

2Sa 24:15

So the LORD^H3068 [fn]sent^H5414 a plague^H1698 upon Israel^H3478 from the morning^H1242 until^H5704 the appointed^H4150 time^H6256, and seventy^H7657 thousand^H505 men^H376 of the people^H5971 from Dan^H1835 to Beersheba^H884 died^H4191.

2Sa 24:16

2Sa 24:16When the angel extended his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD relented of the disaster and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough! Now drop your hand!” And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

2Sa 24:17

2Sa 24:17Then David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who was striking down the people, and said, “Behold, it is I who have sinned, and it is I who have done wrong; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let Your hand be against me and against my father’s house!”

David Builds an Altar

(1Ch 21:18–27 )

2Sa 24:18

So Gad^H1410 came^H935 to David^H1732 that day^H3117 and said^H559 to him, “Go^H5927 up^H5927, erect^H6965 an altar^H4196 to the LORD^H3068 on the threshing^H1637 floor^H1637 of [fn]Araunah^H728 the Jebusite^H2983.”

2Sa 24:19

2Sa 24:19Then David went up in accordance with the word of Gad, just as the LORD had commanded.

2Sa 24:20

2Sa 24:20And Araunah looked down and saw the king and his servants crossing over toward him; so Araunah went out and bowed his face to the ground before the king.

2Sa 24:21

2Sa 24:21Then Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” And David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, in order to build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague may be [fn]withdrawn from the people.”

2Sa 24:22

2Sa 24:22Araunah then said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what is good in his sight. Look, here are the oxen for the burnt offering, the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood.

2Sa 24:23

2Sa 24:23“Everything, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the LORD your God be favorable to you.”

2Sa 24:24

2Sa 24:24However, the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will certainly buy it from you for a price; for I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God [fn]that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

2Sa 24:25

2Sa 24:25Then David built there an altar to the LORD, and he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And the LORD responded to prayer for the land, and the plague was [fn]withdrawn from Israel.
