Jehoram Restores the Shunammite’s Land

Now Elisha^H477 spoke^H1696 to the woman^H802 whose^H834 son^H1121 he had restored^H2421 to^H2421 life^H2421, saying^H559, “Arise^H6965 and go^H1980 [fn]with your household^H1004, and live^H1481 wherever^H834 you can live^H1481; for the LORD^H3068 has called^H7121 for a famine^H7458, and it will indeed^H1571 come^H935 on the land^H776 for seven^H7651 years^H8141.”

2Ki 8:2

2Ki 8:2So the woman arose and acted in accordance with the word of the man of God: she went with her household and resided in the land of the Philistines for seven years.

2Ki 8:3

2Ki 8:3Then at the end of seven years, the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went to [fn]appeal to the king for her house and for her field.

2Ki 8:4

2Ki 8:4Now the king was speaking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please report to me all the great things that Elisha has done.”

2Ki 8:5

2Ki 8:5And as he was reporting to the king how he had restored to life the one who was dead, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life [fn]appealed to the king for her house and for her field. And Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the woman and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.”

2Ki 8:6

2Ki 8:6When the king asked the woman, she told everything to him. So the king appointed an officer for her, saying, “Restore all that was hers and all the produce of the field from the day that she left the land even until now.”

Elisha Predicts Evil from Hazael

2Ki 8:7

Then Elisha^H477 came^H935 to Damascus^H1834. Now Ben-hadad^H1130, the king^H4428 of Aram^H758, was^H2470 sick^H2470, and it was told^H5046 to him, saying^H559, “The man^H376 of God^H430 has come^H935 here^H5704^H2008.”

2Ki 8:8

2Ki 8:8And the king said to Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand and go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the LORD by him, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’”

2Ki 8:9

2Ki 8:9So Hazael went to meet him and took a gift in his hand, even every kind of good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ loads; and he came and stood before him and said, “Your son Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me to you, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’”

2Ki 8:10

2Ki 8:10Then Elisha said to him, “Go, say to him, ‘You will certainly recover’; but the LORD has shown me that he will certainly die.”

2Ki 8:11

2Ki 8:11And he [fn]stared steadily at him until Hazael was embarrassed, and then the man of God wept.

2Ki 8:12

2Ki 8:12And Hazael said, “Why is my lord weeping?” And he [fn]answered, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel: you will set their fortified cities on fire, you will kill their young men with the sword, their little ones you will smash to pieces, and you will rip up their pregnant women.”

2Ki 8:13

2Ki 8:13Then Hazael said, “But what is your servant—a lowly dog—that he could do this great thing?” And Elisha [fn]answered, “The LORD has shown me that you will be king over Aram.”

2Ki 8:14

2Ki 8:14So he left Elisha and came to his master, who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he [fn]answered, “He told me that you would certainly recover.”

2Ki 8:15

2Ki 8:15But on the following day, he took the [fn]cover and dipped it in water, and spread it over his face, so that he died. And Hazael became king in his place.

Another Jehoram Reigns in Judah

2Ki 8:16

Now in the fifth^H2568 year^H8141 of Joram^H3141 the son^H1121 of Ahab^H256 king^H4428 of Israel^H3478, when Jehoshaphat^H3092 was the king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, Jehoram^H3088 the son^H1121 of Jehoshaphat^H3092 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063 became^H4427 king^H4427.

2Ki 8:17

2Ki 8:17He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.

2Ki 8:18

2Ki 8:18He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for Ahab’s daughter was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the LORD.

2Ki 8:19

2Ki 8:19However, the LORD did not want to destroy Judah, for the sake of David His servant, since He had [fn]promised him to give him a [fn]lamp through his sons always.

2Ki 8:20

In his days^H3117 Edom^H123 broke^H6586 away^H6586 from the [fn]rule^H3027 of Judah^H3063, and appointed^H4427 a king^H4428 over^H5921 themselves.

2Ki 8:21

2Ki 8:21Then Joram crossed over to Zair, and all his chariots with him. And he got up at night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and the captains of the chariots; but [fn]his army fled to their tents.

2Ki 8:22

2Ki 8:22So Edom has broken away from [fn]Judah to this day. Then Libnah broke away at the same time.

2Ki 8:23

2Ki 8:23Now the rest of the acts of Joram and everything that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

Ahaziah Succeeds Jehoram in Judah

2Ki 8:24

2Ki 8:24So Joram [fn]lay down with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and his son Ahaziah became king in his place.

2Ki 8:25

In the twelfth^H8147^H6240 year^H8141 of Joram^H3141 the son^H1121 of Ahab^H256 king^H4428 of Israel^H3478, Ahaziah^H274 the son^H1121 of Jehoram^H3088 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063 began to reign^H4427.

2Ki 8:26

2Ki 8:26Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.

2Ki 8:27

2Ki 8:27He walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did evil in the sight of the LORD, like the house of Ahab, because he was a son-in-law of the house of Ahab.

2Ki 8:28

Then he went^H1980 with Joram^H3141 the son^H1121 of Ahab^H256 to war^H4421 against^H5973 Hazael^H2371 king^H4428 of Aram^H758 at Ramoth-gilead^H7433, and the Arameans^H761 [fn]wounded^H5221 Joram^H3141.

2Ki 8:29

2Ki 8:29So King Joram returned to have himself healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Arameans had [fn]inflicted on him at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick.
