Josiah Succeeds Amon

Josiah^H2977 was eight^H8083 years^H8141 old^H1121 when he became^H4427 king^H4427, and he reigned^H4427 for thirty-one^H7970^H259 years^H8141 in Jerusalem^H3389; and his mother’s^H517 name^H8034 was Jedidah^H3040 the daughter^H1323 of Adaiah^H5718 of Bozkath^H1218.

2Ki 22:2

2Ki 22:2He did what was right in the sight of the LORD and walked [fn]entirely in the way of his father David, and did not turn aside to the right or to the left.

2Ki 22:3

Now in the eighteenth^H8083^H6240 year^H8141 of King^H4428 Josiah^H2977, the king^H4428 sent^H7971 Shaphan^H8227, the son^H1121 of Azaliah^H683 the son^H1121 of Meshullam^H4918 the scribe^H5608, to the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068, saying^H559,

2Ki 22:4

2Ki 22:4“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, and have him [fn]count all the money brought into the house of the LORD, which the doorkeepers have collected from the people.

2Ki 22:5“And have them hand it over to the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the LORD, and have them give it to the workmen who are in the house of the LORD to repair the [fn]damage to the house:

2Ki 22:6to the carpenters, the builders, the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house.

2Ki 22:7

2Ki 22:7“However, no accounting shall be made with them for the money handed over to them, because they deal honestly.”

Then Hilkiah^H2518 the high^H1419 priest^H3548 said^H559 to Shaphan^H8227 the scribe^H5608, “I have found^H4672 the Book^H5612 of the Law^H8451 in the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068.” And Hilkiah^H2518 gave^H5414 the book^H5612 to Shaphan^H8227, who read^H7121 it.

2Ki 22:9

2Ki 22:9Then Shaphan the scribe came to the king and brought back word to the king and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have handed it over to the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the LORD.”

2Ki 22:10

2Ki 22:10Moreover, Shaphan the scribe informed the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.

2Ki 22:11

When the king^H4428 heard^H8085 the words^H1697 of the Book^H5612 of the Law^H8451, he tore^H7167 his clothes^H899.

2Ki 22:12

2Ki 22:12Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, [fn]Achbor the son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying,

2Ki 22:13

2Ki 22:13“Go, inquire of the LORD for me and for the people and all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found, for the wrath of the LORD that burns against us is great, because our fathers did not listen to the words of this book, to act in accordance with everything that is written regarding us.”

So Hilkiah^H2518 the priest^H3548, Ahikam^H296, Achbor^H5907, Shaphan^H8227, and Asaiah^H6222 went^H1980 to Huldah^H2468 the prophetess^H5031, the wife^H802 of Shallum^H7967 the son^H1121 of [fn]Tikvah^H8616, the son^H1121 of Harhas^H2745, keeper^H8104 of the wardrobe^H899 (and she lived^H3427 in Jerusalem^H3389 in the Second^H4932 Quarter); and they spoke^H1696 to her.

2Ki 22:15Then she said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel says: ‘Tell the man who sent you to Me,

2Ki 22:16“This is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I am going to bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants, all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read.

2Ki 22:17

2Ki 22:17‘Since they have abandoned Me and have burned incense to other gods so that they may provoke Me to anger with all the work of their hands, My wrath burns against this place, and it shall not be quenched.’”

2Ki 22:18

2Ki 22:18‘But to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the LORD, this is what you shall say to him: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel says: ‘Regarding the words which you have heard,

2Ki 22:19

2Ki 22:19since your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become an object of horror and a curse, and you have torn your clothes and wept before Me, I have indeed heard you,’ declares the LORD.”

2Ki 22:20

2Ki 22:20‘Therefore, behold, I am going to gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes will not look at all the devastation that I am going to bring on this place.’” So they brought back word to the king.
