Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery

(2Ch 32:24–26; Isa 38:1–8 )

In those^H1992 days^H3117 Hezekiah^H2396 became^H2470 [fn]mortally^H4191 ill^H2470. And Isaiah^H3470 the prophet^H5030, the son^H1121 of Amoz^H531, came^H935 to him and said^H559 to him, “This^H3541 is^H3541 what^H3541 the LORD^H3068 says^H559: ‘Set^H6680 your house^H1004 in^H6680 order^H6680, for you are going to die^H4191 and not live^H2421.’”

2Ki 20:2Then he turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, saying,

2Ki 20:3

2Ki 20:3“Please, LORD, just remember how I have walked before You wholeheartedly and in truth, and have done what is good in Your sight!” And Hezekiah wept [fn]profusely.

2Ki 20:4

2Ki 20:4And even before Isaiah had left the middle courtyard, the word of the LORD came to him, saying,

2Ki 20:5

2Ki 20:5“Return and say to Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of your father David says: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; behold, I am going to heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD.

2Ki 20:6

2Ki 20:6“And I will add fifteen years to your [fn]life, and I will save you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will protect this city for My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.”’”

2Ki 20:7

2Ki 20:7Then Isaiah said, “Take a cake of figs.” And they took it and placed it on the inflamed spot, and he recovered.

2Ki 20:8

Now Hezekiah^H2396 said^H559 to Isaiah^H3470, “What^H4100 will be the sign^H226 that the LORD^H3068 will heal^H7495 me, and that I will go^H5927 up^H5927 to the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068 on the third^H7992 day^H3117?”

2Ki 20:9

2Ki 20:9Isaiah said, “This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will perform the word that He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten steps or go back ten steps?”

2Ki 20:10

2Ki 20:10So Hezekiah said, “It is easy for the shadow to decline ten steps; no, but have the shadow turn backward ten steps.”

2Ki 20:11

2Ki 20:11Then Isaiah the prophet called out to the LORD, and He brought the shadow on the [fn]stairway back ten steps by which it had gone down on the [fn]stairway of Ahaz.

Hezekiah Shows Babylon His Treasures

(Isa 39:1–8 )

2Ki 20:12

At that time^H6256 [fn]Berodach-baladan^H1255, a son^H1121 of Baladan^H1081, king^H4428 of Babylon^H894, sent^H7971 letters^H5612 and a gift^H4503 to Hezekiah^H2396, because^H3588 he heard^H8085 that Hezekiah^H2396 had been^H2470 sick^H2470.

2Ki 20:13

2Ki 20:13And Hezekiah listened to [fn]them, and showed them all his treasure house, the silver, the gold, the balsam oil, the [fn]scented oil, the house of his armor, and everything that was found in his treasuries. There was nothing in his house nor in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them.

2Ki 20:14

2Ki 20:14Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and said to him, “What did these men say, and from where have they come to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They have come from a far country, from Babylon.”

2Ki 20:15

2Ki 20:15Isaiah said, “What have they seen in your house?” So Hezekiah [fn]answered, “They have seen everything that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasuries that I have not shown them.”

2Ki 20:16

Then Isaiah^H3470 said^H559 to Hezekiah^H2396, “Hear^H8085 the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068:

2Ki 20:17

2Ki 20:17‘Behold, the days are coming when everything that is in your house, and what your fathers have stored up to this day, will be carried to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the LORD.

2Ki 20:18

2Ki 20:18‘And some of your sons who will come from you, whom you will father, will be taken away; and they will become officials in the palace of the king of Babylon.’”

2Ki 20:19

2Ki 20:19Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD which you have spoken is good.” For he [fn]thought, “Is it not good, if there will be peace and [fn]security in my days?”

2Ki 20:20

Now the rest^H3499 of the acts^H1697 of Hezekiah^H2396 and all^H3605 his might^H1369, and how^H834 he constructed^H6213 the pool^H1295 and the conduit^H8585 and brought^H935 water^H4325 into the city^H5892, are they not written^H3789 in the Book^H5612 of the Chronicles^H1697^H3117 of the Kings^H4428 of Judah^H3063?

2Ki 20:21

2Ki 20:21So Hezekiah [fn]lay down with his fathers, and his son Manasseh became king in his place.
