The Passover Held Again

(2Ki 23:21–23 )

Then Josiah^H2977 celebrated^H6213 the Passover^H6453 to the LORD^H3068 in Jerusalem^H3389, and they slaughtered^H7819 the Passover^H6453 animals on the fourteenth^H702^H6240 day of the first^H7223 month^H2320.

2Ch 35:2

2Ch 35:2He appointed the priests to their offices and encouraged them in the service of the house of the LORD.

2Ch 35:3

2Ch 35:3He also said to the Levites who taught all Israel and who were holy to the LORD, “Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel built; it will not be a burden on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.

2Ch 35:4

2Ch 35:4“Prepare yourselves by your fathers’ households in your divisions, according to the writing of David king of Israel and according to the writing of his son Solomon.

2Ch 35:5

2Ch 35:5“Furthermore, stand in the holy place according to the sections of the fathers’ households of your countrymen, the [fn]lay people, and according to the Levites, by division of a father’s household.

2Ch 35:6

2Ch 35:6“Now slaughter the Passover animals, keep one another consecrated, and prepare for your countrymen to act in accordance with the word of the LORD by Moses.”

2Ch 35:7

Josiah^H2977 contributed^H7311 to the lay^H1121 people^H5971, to all^H3605 who were^H4672 present^H4672, flocks^H6629 of lambs^H3532 and young^H1121^H5795 goats^H1121^H5795, all^H3605 for the Passover^H6453 offerings^H6453, numbering^H4557 thirty^H7970 thousand^H505, plus three^H7969 thousand^H505 bulls^H1241; these^H428 were from the king’s^H4428 property^H7399.

2Ch 35:8

2Ch 35:8His officers also contributed a [fn]voluntary offering to the people, the priests, and the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the officials of the house of God, gave the priests 2,600 from the flocks and three hundred bulls, for the Passover offerings.

2Ch 35:9

2Ch 35:9Conaniah also, and his brothers Shemaiah and Nethanel, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, the officers of the Levites, contributed five thousand from the flocks and five hundred bulls to the Levites for the Passover offerings.

2Ch 35:10

So the service^H5656 was prepared^H3559, and the priests^H3548 stood^H5975 at their positions^H5977 and the Levites^H3881 by their divisions^H4256 according to the king’s^H4428 command^H4687.

2Ch 35:11

2Ch 35:11 [fn]They slaughtered the Passover animals, and while the priests [fn]sprinkled the blood received from their hand, the Levites skinned the animals.

2Ch 35:12

2Ch 35:12Then they removed the burnt offerings so that they might give them to the sections of the fathers’ households of the lay people to present to the LORD, as it is written in the Book of Moses. They did this with the bulls as well.

2Ch 35:13

2Ch 35:13So they roasted the Passover animals on the fire according to the ordinance, and they boiled the holy things in pots, in kettles, and in pans and carried them quickly to all the lay people.

2Ch 35:14

2Ch 35:14Afterward they prepared for themselves and for the priests, because the priests, the sons of Aaron, were offering the burnt offerings and the fat until night; so the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests, the sons of Aaron.

2Ch 35:15

2Ch 35:15The singers, the sons of Asaph, were also at their positions according to the command of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer; and the gatekeepers at each gate did not have to leave their service, because their kinsmen the Levites prepared for them.

2Ch 35:16

So all^H3605 the service^H5656 of the LORD^H3068 was prepared^H3559 on that day^H3117 to celebrate^H6213 the Passover^H6453, and to offer^H5927 burnt^H5930 offerings^H5930 on the altar^H4196 of the LORD^H3068 according to the command^H4687 of King^H4428 Josiah^H2977.

2Ch 35:17

2Ch 35:17And the sons of Israel who were present celebrated the Passover at that time, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days.

2Ch 35:18

2Ch 35:18There had not been a Passover celebrated like it in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet; nor had any of the kings of Israel celebrated such a Passover as Josiah did with the priests, the Levites, all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

2Ch 35:19

2Ch 35:19In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign this Passover was celebrated.

Josiah Dies in Battle

2Ch 35:20

After^H310 all^H3605 this^H2088, when^H834 Josiah^H2977 had set^H3559 the [fn]temple^H1004 in^H3559 order^H3559, Neco^H5224 king^H4428 of Egypt^H4714 came^H5927 up^H5927 to wage^H3898 war^H3898 at Carchemish^H3751 on the Euphrates^H6578, and Josiah^H2977 went^H3318 out^H3318 to engage^H7122 him.

2Ch 35:21

2Ch 35:21But [fn]Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “[fn]What business do you have with me, King of Judah? I am not coming against you today, but against the house with which I am at war, and God has told me to hurry. For your own sake, stop interfering with God who is with me, so that He does not destroy you.”

2Ch 35:22

2Ch 35:22However, Josiah would not turn [fn]away from him, but disguised himself in order to fight against him; nor did he listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, but he came to wage war on the plain of Megiddo.

2Ch 35:23

2Ch 35:23The archers shot King Josiah, and the king said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am badly wounded.”

2Ch 35:24

2Ch 35:24So his servants took him out of the chariot and carried him on the second chariot which he had, and brought him to Jerusalem [fn]where he died and was buried in the tombs of his fathers. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.

2Ch 35:25

2Ch 35:25Then Jeremiah chanted a song of mourning for Josiah. And all the male and female singers speak about Josiah in their songs of mourning to this day. And they made them an ordinance in Israel; behold, they are also written in the Lamentations.

2Ch 35:26

2Ch 35:26Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his deeds of devotion as written in the Law of the LORD,

2Ch 35:27

2Ch 35:27and his acts, the first to the last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
