Sennacherib Invades Judah

(2Ki 18:13—19:34; Isa 36:1–22 )

After^H310 these^H428 [fn]acts^H1697 of faithfulness^H571 Sennacherib^H5576 king^H4428 of Assyria^H804 came^H935 and invaded^H935 Judah^H3063 and besieged^H2583^H5921 the fortified^H1219 cities^H5892, and [fn]intended^H559 to break^H1234 into them for himself.

2Ch 32:2

2Ch 32:2Now when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that [fn]he intended to wage war against Jerusalem,

2Ch 32:3

2Ch 32:3he decided with his officers and his warriors to cut off the supply of water from the springs which were outside the city, and they helped him.

2Ch 32:4

2Ch 32:4So many people assembled and stopped up all the springs and the stream which flowed [fn]through the region, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water?”

2Ch 32:5

2Ch 32:5And he resolutely set to work and rebuilt all of the wall that had been broken down and [fn]erected towers on it, and built another outside wall and strengthened the [fn]Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in great numbers.

2Ch 32:6

2Ch 32:6He appointed military officers over the people and gathered them to him in the public square at the city gate, and spoke [fn]encouragingly to them, saying,

2Ch 32:7

2Ch 32:7“Be strong and courageous, do not fear or be dismayed because of the king of Assyria nor because of all the horde that is with him; for the One with us is greater than the one with him.

2Ch 32:8

2Ch 32:8“With him is only an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people relied on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

Sennacherib Undermines Hezekiah

2Ch 32:9

After^H310 this^H2088 Sennacherib^H5576 king^H4428 of Assyria^H804 sent^H7971 his servants^H5650 to Jerusalem^H3389 while he was [fn]besieging^H5921 Lachish^H3923 with all^H3605 his forces^H4475 with him, against^H5921 Hezekiah^H2396 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063 and against^H5921 all^H3605 of Judah^H3063 who^H834 were in Jerusalem^H3389, saying^H559,

2Ch 32:10“This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: ‘On what are you trusting that you are staying in Jerusalem under siege?

2Ch 32:11

2Ch 32:11‘Is Hezekiah not misleading you to give yourselves over to die by hunger and by thirst, saying, “The LORD our God will save us from the [fn]hand of the king of Assyria”?

2Ch 32:12

2Ch 32:12‘Is it not the same Hezekiah who removed His high places and His altars, and said to Judah and [fn]Jerusalem, “You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall [fn]burn incense”?

2Ch 32:13

2Ch 32:13‘Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to save their land from my hand?

2Ch 32:14

2Ch 32:14‘Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed who could save his people from my hand, that your God would be able to save you from my hand?

2Ch 32:15

2Ch 32:15‘Now then, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like this, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to save his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God save you from my hand?’”

2Ch 32:16

His servants^H5650 spoke^H1696 further^H5750 against^H5921 the LORD^H3068 God^H430 and against^H5921 His servant^H5650 Hezekiah^H2396.

2Ch 32:17

2Ch 32:17He also wrote letters to insult the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, “As the gods of the nations of the lands [fn]have not saved their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not save His people from my hand.”

2Ch 32:18

2Ch 32:18They called this out with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten and terrify them, so that they might take the city.

2Ch 32:19

2Ch 32:19They spoke [fn]of the God of Jerusalem as they did against the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of human hands.

Hezekiah’s Prayer Is Answered

(2Ki 19:35–37 )

2Ch 32:20

But King^H4428 Hezekiah^H2396 and Isaiah^H3470 the prophet^H5030, the son^H1121 of Amoz^H531, prayed^H6419 about^H5921 this^H2088 and called^H2199 out^H2199 to heaven^H8064 for help^H2199.

2Ch 32:21

2Ch 32:21And the LORD sent an angel who destroyed every warrior, commander, and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned [fn]in shame to his own land. And when he had entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons killed him there with the sword.

2Ch 32:22

2Ch 32:22So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all others, and [fn]guided them on every side.

2Ch 32:23

2Ch 32:23And many were bringing gifts to the LORD at Jerusalem and valuable presents to Hezekiah king of Judah; so thereafter he rose in the sight of all nations.

2Ch 32:24

In those^H1992 days^H3117 Hezekiah^H2396 became^H2470 [fn]mortally^H4191 ill^H2470; and he prayed^H6419 to the LORD^H3068, and [fn]the LORD spoke^H559 to him and gave^H5414 him a sign^H4159.

2Ch 32:25

2Ch 32:25But Hezekiah did nothing in return for the benefit [fn]he received, because his heart was [fn]proud; therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

2Ch 32:26

2Ch 32:26However, Hezekiah [fn]humbled the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

2Ch 32:27

Now Hezekiah^H2396 had^H1961 immense^H3966 riches^H6239 and honor^H3519; and he made^H6213 for himself treasuries^H214 for silver^H3701, gold^H2091, precious^H3368 stones^H68, spices^H1314, shields^H4043, and all^H3605 kinds of valuable^H2532 articles^H3627,

2Ch 32:28

2Ch 32:28also storehouses for the produce of grain, wine, and oil; stalls for all kinds of cattle, and [fn]sheepfolds for the flocks.

2Ch 32:29

2Ch 32:29He made cities for himself and acquired flocks and herds in abundance, because God had given him very great [fn]wealth.

2Ch 32:30

2Ch 32:30It was Hezekiah who stopped the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah was successful in everything that he did.

2Ch 32:31

2Ch 32:31Even in the matter of the messengers of the rulers of Babylon, who were sent to him to inquire about the wonder that had happened in the land; God left him alone only to test him, so that He might know everything that was in his heart.

2Ch 32:32

Now the rest^H3499 of the acts^H1697 of Hezekiah^H2396 and his deeds^H2617 of^H2617 devotion^H2617, behold^H2009, they are written^H3789 in the vision^H2377 of Isaiah^H3470 the prophet^H5030, the son^H1121 of Amoz^H531, in the Book^H5612 of the Kings^H4428 of Judah^H3063 and Israel^H3478.

2Ch 32:33

2Ch 32:33So Hezekiah [fn]lay down with his fathers, and they buried him in the [fn]upper section of the tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem honored him at his death. And his son Manasseh became king in his place.
