Jehoram Succeeds Jehoshaphat in Judah

(1Ki 22:50; 2Ki 8:16–24 )

Then Jehoshaphat^H3092 [fn]lay^H7901 down^H7901 with his fathers^H1 and was buried^H6912 with his fathers^H1 in the city^H5892 of David^H1732, and his son^H1121 Jehoram^H3088 became^H4427 king^H4427 in^H8478 his place^H8478.

2Ch 21:2

2Ch 21:2He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, [fn]Azaryahu, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.

2Ch 21:3

2Ch 21:3Their father gave them many gifts of silver, gold, and precious things, with fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the firstborn.

2Ch 21:4

Now when Jehoram^H3088 had [fn]taken^H6965 over^H5921 the kingdom^H4467 of his father^H1 and gathered^H2388 courage^H2388, he killed^H2026 all^H3605 his brothers^H251 with the sword^H2719, and some^H4480 of the leaders^H8269 of Israel^H3478 as^H1571 well^H1571.

2Ch 21:5Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.

2Ch 21:6

2Ch 21:6He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for Ahab’s daughter was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the LORD.

2Ch 21:7

2Ch 21:7Yet the LORD was not willing to destroy the house of David because of the covenant which He had made with David, and because He had promised to give a lamp to him and his sons forever.

Revolt against Judah

2Ch 21:8

In his days^H3117 Edom^H123 broke^H6586 away^H6586 [fn]from^H4480^H8478^H3027 the rule^H3027 of Judah^H3063, and appointed^H4427 a king^H4428 over^H5921 themselves.

2Ch 21:9

2Ch 21:9Then Jehoram crossed over with his commanders and all his chariots with him. And he got up at night and struck and killed the Edomites who were surrounding him, and the commanders of the chariots.

2Ch 21:10

2Ch 21:10So Edom revolted [fn]against Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time [fn]against his rule because he had abandoned the LORD God of his fathers.

2Ch 21:11

2Ch 21:11Furthermore, he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to be unfaithful, and led Judah astray.

2Ch 21:12

Then a letter^H4385 came^H935 to him from Elijah^H452 the prophet^H5030, saying^H559, “This^H3541 is^H3541 what^H3541 the LORD^H3068, the God^H430 of your father^H1 David^H1732 says: ‘Because^H8478^H834 you have not walked^H1980 in the ways^H1870 of your father^H1 Jehoshaphat^H3092 and the ways^H1870 of Asa^H609 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063,

2Ch 21:13

2Ch 21:13but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to be unfaithful as the house of Ahab was unfaithful, and you have also killed your brothers, [fn]your own family, who were better than you,

2Ch 21:14

2Ch 21:14behold, the LORD is going to strike your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a great plague;

2Ch 21:15

2Ch 21:15and you will suffer [fn]severe sickness, a disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out because of the sickness, day by day.’”

2Ch 21:16

Then the LORD^H3068 stirred^H5782 up^H5782 against^H5921 Jehoram^H3088 the spirit^H7307 of the Philistines^H6430 and the Arabs^H6163 who^H834 [fn]bordered^H5921^H3027 the Ethiopians^H3569;

2Ch 21:17

2Ch 21:17and they came against Judah and invaded it, and carried away all the possessions found in the king’s house together with his sons and his wives, so that no son was left to him except [fn]Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

2Ch 21:18

So after^H310 all^H3605 this^H2088 the LORD^H3068 struck^H5062 him in his intestines^H4578 with an incurable^H369^H4832 sickness^H2483.

2Ch 21:19

2Ch 21:19Now it came about in the course of time, at the end of two years, that his bowels came out because of his sickness, and he died in great pain. And his people did not make a funeral fire for him like the fire for his fathers.

2Ch 21:20

2Ch 21:20He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for eight years; and he departed [fn]with no one’s regret, and they buried him in the city of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
