Abijah Succeeds Rehoboam

(1Ki 15:1–8 )

In the eighteenth^H8083^H6240 year^H8141 of King^H4428 Jeroboam^H3379, Abijah^H29 became^H4427 king^H4427 over^H5921 Judah^H3063.

2Ch 13:2

2Ch 13:2He reigned in Jerusalem for three years; and his mother’s name was [fn]Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.

Now there was war^H4421 between^H996 Abijah^H29 and Jeroboam^H3379.

2Ch 13:3

2Ch 13:3Abijah began the battle with an army of warriors, four hundred thousand chosen men, while Jeroboam drew up in battle formation against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men who were valiant warriors.

2Ch 13:4

Then Abijah^H29 stood^H6965 on Mount^H2022 Zemaraim^H6787, which^H834 is in the hill^H2022 country^H2022 of Ephraim^H669, and said^H559, “Listen^H8085 to me, Jeroboam^H3379 and all^H3605 Israel^H3478:

2Ch 13:5“Do you not know that the LORD God of Israel gave the rule over Israel forever to David [fn]and his sons by a covenant of salt?

2Ch 13:6

2Ch 13:6“Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his [fn]master,

2Ch 13:7

2Ch 13:7and worthless men gathered to him, wicked men, who proved too strong for Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, when [fn]he was young and timid and could not hold his own against them.

2Ch 13:8

“So now^H6258 you intend^H559 to assert^H2388 yourselves against^H6440 the kingdom^H4467 of the LORD^H3068 [fn]through^H3027 the sons^H1121 of David^H1732, [fn]being a great^H7227 multitude^H1995 and having with you the golden^H2091 calves^H5695 which^H834 Jeroboam^H3379 made^H6213 for you as gods^H430.

2Ch 13:9“Have you not driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a bull and seven rams, even he may become a priest of things that are not gods.

2Ch 13:10

2Ch 13:10“But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not abandoned Him; and the sons of Aaron are ministering to the LORD as priests, and the Levites [fn]attend to their work.

2Ch 13:11

2Ch 13:11“Every morning and evening they [fn]burn to the LORD burnt offerings and fragrant incense, and the showbread is set on the clean table, and the golden lampstand with its lamps is ready to light every evening; for we perform our duty to the LORD our God, but you have abandoned Him.

2Ch 13:12

2Ch 13:12“Now behold, God is with us at our head, and His priests with the signal trumpets to sound the war cry against you. Sons of Israel, do not fight against the LORD God of your fathers, for you will not succeed.”

2Ch 13:13

But Jeroboam^H3379 had set^H5437 an ambush^H3993 to come^H935 from behind^H310, so that Israel was in front^H6440 of Judah^H3063 and the ambush^H3993 was behind^H4480^H310 them.

2Ch 13:14

2Ch 13:14When Judah turned around, behold, [fn]they were attacked both from front and rear; so they cried out to the LORD, and the priests blew the trumpets.

2Ch 13:15

2Ch 13:15Then the men of Judah raised a war cry, and when the men of Judah raised the war cry, God [fn]defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

2Ch 13:16

2Ch 13:16When the sons of Israel fled from Judah, God handed them over to them.

2Ch 13:17

2Ch 13:17Abijah and his people defeated them with a great slaughter, so that five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell slain.

2Ch 13:18

2Ch 13:18The sons of Israel were subdued at that time, and the sons of Judah [fn]conquered because they trusted in the LORD, the God of their fathers.

2Ch 13:19

2Ch 13:19Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured from him several cities, Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages, and [fn]Ephron with its villages.

2Ch 13:20

2Ch 13:20Jeroboam did not again recover strength in the days of Abijah; and the LORD struck him and he died.

2Ch 13:21

But Abijah^H29 became^H2388 powerful^H2388, and he took^H5375 fourteen^H702^H6240 wives^H802 for himself, and fathered^H3205 twenty-two^H6242^H8147 sons^H1121 and sixteen^H8337^H6240 daughters^H1323.

2Ch 13:22

2Ch 13:22Now the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways and his words are written in the [fn]treatise of Iddo the prophet.
