Rehoboam’s Reign of Foolishness

(1Ki 12:1–19 )

Then Rehoboam^H7346 went^H1980 to Shechem^H7927, because^H3588 all^H3605 Israel^H3478 had come^H935 to Shechem^H7927 to make^H4427 him king^H4427.

2Ch 10:2

2Ch 10:2When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard about it (he was in Egypt where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), Jeroboam returned from Egypt.

2Ch 10:3

2Ch 10:3So they sent word and summoned him. When Jeroboam and all Israel came, they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

2Ch 10:4

2Ch 10:4“Your father made our yoke hard; but now, lighten the hard labor imposed by your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”

2Ch 10:5

2Ch 10:5He said to them, “Return to me again in three days.” So the people departed.

2Ch 10:6

And then King^H4428 Rehoboam^H7346 consulted^H3289 with the elders^H2205 who^H834 had^H1961 [fn]served^H5975^H6440 his father^H1 Solomon^H8010 while he was still alive^H2416, saying^H559, “How^H349 do you advise^H3289 me to answer^H7725^H1697 this^H2088 people^H5971?”

2Ch 10:7

2Ch 10:7They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to this people and please them and speak pleasant words to them, then they will be your servants always.”

2Ch 10:8

2Ch 10:8But he ignored the advice of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him [fn]and served him.

2Ch 10:9

2Ch 10:9He said to them, “What advice do you give, so that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?”

2Ch 10:10

2Ch 10:10The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “This is what you should say to the people who spoke to you, saying: ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter for us!’ You should speak this way to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!

2Ch 10:11

2Ch 10:11‘Now then, my father loaded you with a heavy yoke; yet I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with [fn]scorpions!’”

2Ch 10:12

So Jeroboam^H3379 and all^H3605 the people^H5971 came^H935 to Rehoboam^H7346 on the third^H7992 day^H3117, just^H834 as^H834 the king^H4428 had [fn]directed^H1696, saying^H559, “Return^H7725 to me on the third^H7992 day^H3117.”

2Ch 10:13

2Ch 10:13The king answered them harshly, and King Rehoboam ignored the advice of the elders.

2Ch 10:14

2Ch 10:14He spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “[fn]My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with [fn]scorpions.”

2Ch 10:15

2Ch 10:15So the king did not listen to the people, because it was a turn of events from God so that the LORD might establish His word, which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

2Ch 10:16

When all^H3605 Israel^H3478 saw that the king^H4428 had not listened^H8085 to them, the people^H5971 replied^H7725 to the king^H4428, saying^H559,

“What^H4100 share^H2506 do we have in David^H1732?

We have no^H3808 inheritance^H5159 in the son^H1121 of Jesse^H3448.

Everyone^H376 to your tents^H168, Israel^H3478!

Now^H6258 look^H7200 after your own house^H1004, David^H1732!”

So all^H3605 Israel^H3478 went^H1980 away to their tents^H168.

2Ch 10:17

2Ch 10:17But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

2Ch 10:18

2Ch 10:18Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, and the sons of Israel stoned him [fn]to death. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.

2Ch 10:19

2Ch 10:19So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
