The Ark Returned to Israel

Now the ark^H727 of the LORD^H3068 had been^H1961 in the territory^H7704 of the Philistines^H6430 for seven^H7651 months^H2320.

1Sa 6:2

1Sa 6:2And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What are we to do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us [fn]how we may send it to its place.”

1Sa 6:3

1Sa 6:3And they said, “If you are going to send the ark of the God of Israel away, do not send it empty; but you shall certainly return to Him a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be revealed to you why His hand does not leave you.”

1Sa 6:4

1Sa 6:4Then they said, “What is to be the guilt offering that we shall return to Him?” And they said, “Five gold tumors and five gold mice corresponding to the number of the governors of the Philistines, since one plague was on all of [fn]you and on your governors.

1Sa 6:5

1Sa 6:5“So you shall make likenesses of your tumors and likenesses of your mice that are ruining the land, and you shall give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps He will lighten His hand from you, your gods, and your land.

1Sa 6:6

1Sa 6:6“Why then do you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When He had severely dealt with them, did they not let [fn]the people go, and they left?

1Sa 6:7

1Sa 6:7“Now then, take and prepare a new cart and two milk cows on which there has never been a yoke; and hitch the cows to the cart and take their calves back home, away from them.

1Sa 6:8

1Sa 6:8“Then take the ark of the LORD and place it on the cart; and put the articles of gold which you return to Him as a guilt offering in a saddlebag by its side. Then send it away that it may go.

1Sa 6:9

1Sa 6:9“But watch: if it goes up by the way of its own territory to Beth-shemesh, then He has done this great evil to us. But if not, then we will know that it was not His hand that struck us; it happened to us by chance.”

1Sa 6:10

Then the men^H376 did^H6213 so^H3651: they took^H3947 two^H8147 milk^H5763 cows^H6510 and hitched^H631 them to the cart^H5699, and shut^H3607 in their calves^H1121 at home^H1004.

1Sa 6:11

1Sa 6:11And they put the ark of the LORD on the cart, and the saddlebag with the gold mice and the likenesses of their tumors.

1Sa 6:12

1Sa 6:12Now the cows went straight in the [fn]direction of Beth-shemesh; they went on the same road, bellowing as they went, and did not turn off to the right or to the left. And the governors of the Philistines followed them to the border of Beth-shemesh.

1Sa 6:13

Now the people of Beth-shemesh^H1053 were gathering^H7114 in^H7114 their wheat^H2406 harvest^H7105 in the valley^H6010, and they raised^H5375 their eyes^H5869 and saw^H7200 the ark^H727, and rejoiced^H8055 at seeing^H7200 it.

1Sa 6:14

1Sa 6:14And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite and stopped there where there was a large stone; and they split the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.

1Sa 6:15

1Sa 6:15And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the saddlebag that was with it, in which were the articles of gold, and put them on the large stone; and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices that day to the LORD.

1Sa 6:16

1Sa 6:16When the five governors of the Philistines saw it, they returned to Ekron that day.

1Sa 6:17

Now these^H428 are the gold^H2091 tumors^H2914 which^H834 the Philistines^H6430 returned^H7725 as a guilt^H817 offering^H817 to the LORD^H3068: one^H259 for Ashdod^H795, one^H259 for Gaza^H5804, one^H259 for Ashkelon^H831, one^H259 for Gath^H1661, and one^H259 for Ekron^H6138;

1Sa 6:18

1Sa 6:18and the gold mice, corresponding to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five governors, both of fortified cities and of country villages. The large [fn]stone on which they placed the ark of the LORD is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite.

1Sa 6:19

Now He fatally^H5221 struck^H5221 some of the men^H376 of Beth-shemesh^H1053 because^H3588 they had looked^H7200 into the ark^H727 of the LORD^H3068. He struck^H5221 50,070^H7657^H2572^H505 men^H376 among the people^H5971, and the people^H5971 mourned^H56 because^H3588 the LORD^H3068 had struck^H5221 the people^H5971 with a great^H1419 slaughter^H4347.

1Sa 6:20

1Sa 6:20And the men of Beth-shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God? And to whom will He go up from us?”

1Sa 6:21

1Sa 6:21So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back the ark of the LORD; come down and take it up to yourselves.”
