Philistines Take the Ark in Victory

So the word^H1697 of Samuel^H8050 came^H1961 to all^H3605 Israel^H3478. Now Israel^H3478 went^H3318 out^H3318 to meet^H7122 the Philistines^H6430 in battle^H4421, and they camped^H2583 beside^H5921 Ebenezer^H72, while the Philistines^H6430 camped^H2583 in Aphek^H663.

1Sa 4:2

1Sa 4:2Then the Philistines drew up in battle formation to meet Israel. When the battle [fn]spread, Israel was [fn]defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the battlefield.

1Sa 4:3

1Sa 4:3When the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s take the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh, so that He may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.”

1Sa 4:4

1Sa 4:4So the people sent men to Shiloh, and from there they carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD of armies who is enthroned above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

1Sa 4:5

And as the ark^H727 of the covenant^H1285 of the LORD^H3068 was coming^H935 into the camp^H4264, all^H3605 Israel^H3478 shouted^H7321 with a great^H1419 shout^H8643, so that the earth^H776 resounded^H1949.

1Sa 4:6

1Sa 4:6And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” Then they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp.

1Sa 4:7

1Sa 4:7So the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp!” And they said, “Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before.

1Sa 4:8

1Sa 4:8“Woe to us! Who will save us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

1Sa 4:9

1Sa 4:9“Take courage and be men, Philistines, or you will become slaves to the Hebrews, as they have been slaves to you; so be men and fight!”

1Sa 4:10

So the Philistines^H6430 fought^H3898 and Israel^H3478 was defeated^H5062, and every^H376 man^H376 fled^H5127 to his tent^H168; and the defeat^H4347 was very^H3966 great^H1419, for thirty^H7970 thousand^H505 foot^H7273 soldiers^H7273 of Israel^H3478 fell^H5307.

1Sa 4:11

1Sa 4:11Moreover, the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

1Sa 4:12

Now a man^H376 of Benjamin^H1144 ran^H7323 from the battle^H4634 line^H4634 and came^H935 to Shiloh^H7887 the same^H1931 day^H3117 with his clothes^H4055 torn^H7167, and [fn]dust^H127 on his head^H7218.

1Sa 4:13

1Sa 4:13When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat [fn]by the road keeping watch, because his heart was anxious about the ark of God. And the man came to give a report in the city, and all the city cried out.

1Sa 4:14

1Sa 4:14When Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said, “What does the noise of this commotion mean?” Then the man came hurriedly and told Eli.

1Sa 4:15

1Sa 4:15Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were [fn]fixed and he could not see.

1Sa 4:16

1Sa 4:16The man said to Eli, “I am the one who came from the battle line. Indeed, I escaped from the battle line today.” And he said, “How are things, my son?”

1Sa 4:17

1Sa 4:17Then the one who brought the news replied, “Israel has fled before the Philistines and there has also been a great defeat among the people, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas are also dead; and the ark of God has been taken.”

1Sa 4:18

1Sa 4:18When he mentioned the ark of God, [fn]Eli fell off the seat backward beside the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for [fn]he was old and heavy. And so he judged Israel for forty years.

1Sa 4:19

Now his daughter-in-law^H3618, Phinehas’^H6372 wife^H802, was pregnant^H2030 and about to give^H3205 birth^H3205; and when she heard^H8085 the news^H8052 that the ark^H727 of God^H430 had been taken^H3947 and that her father-in-law^H2524 and her husband^H376 had died^H4191, she kneeled^H3766 down^H3766 and gave^H3205 birth^H3205, because^H3588 her pains^H6735 came^H2015 upon her.

1Sa 4:20

1Sa 4:20And about the time of her death the women who were standing by her said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she did not answer or pay attention.

1Sa 4:21

1Sa 4:21And she named the boy [fn]Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been taken and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

1Sa 4:22

1Sa 4:22So she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, because the ark of God has been taken.”
