David’s Victory over the Amalekites

Then it happened^H1961, when David^H1732 and his men^H376 came^H935 to Ziklag^H6860 on the third^H7992 day^H3117, that the Amalekites^H6003 had carried^H6584 out^H6584 an^H6584 attack^H6584 on the [fn]Negev^H5045 and on Ziklag^H6860, and had [fn]overthrown^H5221 Ziklag^H6860 and burned^H8313 it with fire^H784;

1Sa 30:2

1Sa 30:2and they took captive the women and all who were in it, from the small to the great, [fn]without killing anyone, and drove them off and went their way.

1Sa 30:3

1Sa 30:3When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire, and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.

1Sa 30:4

1Sa 30:4Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep.

1Sa 30:5

1Sa 30:5Now David’s two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the [fn]widow of Nabal the Carmelite.

1Sa 30:6

1Sa 30:6Also, David was in great distress because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were [fn]embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters. But David felt strengthened in the LORD his God.

1Sa 30:7

Then David^H1732 said^H559 to Abiathar^H54 the priest^H3548, the son^H1121 of Ahimelech^H288, “Please^H4994 bring^H5066 me the ephod^H646.” So Abiathar^H54 brought^H5066 the ephod^H646 to David^H1732.

1Sa 30:8

1Sa 30:8And David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I pursue this band of raiders? Will I overtake them?” And He said to him, “Pursue, for you will certainly overtake them, and you will certainly rescue everyone.”

1Sa 30:9

1Sa 30:9So David left, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and they came to the brook Besor, where some who were left behind stayed.

1Sa 30:10

1Sa 30:10But David pursued, he and four hundred men, for two hundred who were too exhausted to cross the brook Besor stayed behind.

1Sa 30:11

Now they found^H4672 an Egyptian^H4713 in the field^H7704 and brought^H3947 him to David^H1732, and gave^H5414 him bread^H3899 and he ate^H398, and they provided^H8248 him water^H4325 to^H8248 drink^H8248.

1Sa 30:12

1Sa 30:12They also gave him a slice of fig cake and two cakes of raisins, and he ate; then his spirit [fn]revived. For he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.

1Sa 30:13

1Sa 30:13Then David said to him, “To whom do you belong? And where are you from?” And he said, “I am a young man of Egypt, a servant of an Amalekite; and my master abandoned me when I became sick three days ago.

1Sa 30:14

1Sa 30:14“We carried out an attack on the [fn]Negev of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on the [fn]Negev of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire.”

1Sa 30:15

1Sa 30:15Then David said to him, “Will you bring me down to this band of raiders?” And he said, “Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will bring you down to this band.”

1Sa 30:16

Now when he had brought^H3381 him down^H3381, behold^H2009, they were dispersed^H5203 over^H5921 all^H3605 the land^H776, eating^H398 and drinking^H8354 and celebrating^H2287 because of all^H3605 the great^H1419 plunder^H7998 that they had taken^H3947 from the land^H776 of the Philistines^H6430 and from the land^H776 of Judah^H3063.

1Sa 30:17

1Sa 30:17And David [fn]slaughtered them from the twilight [fn]until the evening of [fn]the next day; and not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.

1Sa 30:18

1Sa 30:18So David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and [fn]rescued his two wives.

1Sa 30:19

1Sa 30:19And nothing of theirs was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, plunder, or anything that they had taken for themselves; David brought it all back.

1Sa 30:20

1Sa 30:20So David had [fn]captured all the sheep and the cattle which the people drove ahead of [fn]the other livestock, and they said, “This is David’s plunder.”

The Plunder Is Divided

1Sa 30:21

When David^H1732 came^H935 to the two hundred^H3967 men^H376 who^H834 were too^H4480 exhausted^H6296 to follow^H1980^H310 David^H1732 and [fn]had been left^H3427 behind^H3427 at the brook^H5158 Besor^H1308, and they went^H3318 out^H3318 to meet^H7122 David^H1732 and to meet^H7122 the people^H5971 who^H834 were with him, then David^H1732 approached^H5066 the people^H5971 and greeted^H7592^H7965 them.

1Sa 30:22

1Sa 30:22Then all the wicked and [fn]worthless men among those who went with David said, “Since they did not go with [fn]us, we will not give them any of the spoils that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, so that they may lead them away and leave.”

1Sa 30:23

1Sa 30:23But David said, “You must not do so, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us, for He has protected us and handed over to us the band of raiders that came against us.

1Sa 30:24

1Sa 30:24“And who will listen to you in this matter? For as is the share of the one who goes down into the battle, so shall be the share of the one who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike.”

1Sa 30:25

1Sa 30:25So it has been from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.

1Sa 30:26

Now when David^H1732 came^H935 to Ziklag^H6860, he sent^H7971 some of the spoils^H7998 to the elders^H2205 of Judah^H3063, to his friends^H7453, saying^H559, “Behold^H2009, a [fn]gift^H1293 for you from the spoils^H7998 of the enemies^H340 of the LORD^H3068:

1Sa 30:27

1Sa 30:27to those who were in Bethel, to those who were in Ramoth of the [fn]Negev, to those who were in Jattir,

1Sa 30:28

1Sa 30:28to those who were in Aroer, to those who were in Siphmoth, to those who were in Eshtemoa,

1Sa 30:29

1Sa 30:29to those who were in Racal, to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, to those who were in the cities of the Kenites,

1Sa 30:30

1Sa 30:30to those who were in Hormah, to those who were in Bor-ashan, to those who were in Athach,

1Sa 30:31

1Sa 30:31to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men walked.”
