David Protected from Saul

Now Saul^H7586 told^H1696 his son^H1121 Jonathan^H3083 and all^H3605 his servants^H5650 to put^H4191 David^H1732 to^H4191 death^H4191. But Jonathan^H3083, Saul’s^H7586 son^H1121, greatly^H3966 delighted^H2654 in David^H1732.

1Sa 19:2

1Sa 19:2So Jonathan informed David, saying, “My father Saul is seeking to put you to death. Now then, please be on your guard in the morning, and stay in a hiding place and conceal yourself.

1Sa 19:3

1Sa 19:3“And as for me, I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are hiding, and I will speak with my father about you; and whatever I [fn]find out, I will tell you.”

1Sa 19:4

1Sa 19:4Then Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him, “May the king not sin against his servant David, since he has not sinned against you, and since his deeds have been very [fn]beneficial to you.

1Sa 19:5

1Sa 19:5“For he took his life in his hand and struck the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great [fn]victory for all Israel; you saw it and rejoiced. Why then would you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death [fn]for no reason?”

1Sa 19:6

1Sa 19:6Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul vowed, “As the LORD lives, David shall not be put to death.”

1Sa 19:7

1Sa 19:7Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these words. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before.

1Sa 19:8

When there was war^H4421 again^H3254, David^H1732 went^H3318 out^H3318 and fought^H3898 the Philistines^H6430 and [fn]defeated^H5221 them with great^H1419 slaughter^H4347, so that they fled^H5127 from him.

1Sa 19:9

1Sa 19:9Now there was an evil spirit from the LORD on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was playing the harp with his hand.

1Sa 19:10

1Sa 19:10And Saul tried to [fn]pin David to the wall with the spear, but he escaped from Saul’s presence, so that he stuck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.

1Sa 19:11

Then Saul^H7586 sent^H7971 messengers^H4397 to David’s^H1732 house^H1004 to watch^H8104 him, in order to put^H4191 him to^H4191 death^H4191 in the morning^H1242. But Michal^H4324, David’s^H1732 wife^H802, informed^H5046 him, saying^H559, “If^H518 you do not save^H4422 your life^H5315 tonight^H3915, tomorrow^H4279 you will be put^H4191 to^H4191 death^H4191!”

1Sa 19:12

1Sa 19:12So Michal let David down through a window, and he went and fled, and escaped.

1Sa 19:13

1Sa 19:13And Michal took the [fn]household idol and laid it on the bed, and put a quilt of goats’ hair at its head, and covered it with clothing.

1Sa 19:14

1Sa 19:14When Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.”

1Sa 19:15

1Sa 19:15Then Saul sent messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me on [fn]his bed, so that I may put him to death.”

1Sa 19:16

1Sa 19:16When the messengers entered, behold, the [fn]household idol was on the bed with the quilt of goats’ hair at its head.

1Sa 19:17

1Sa 19:17So Saul said to Michal, “Why have you betrayed me like this and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal said to Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! Why should I put you to death?’”

1Sa 19:18

So David^H1732 fled^H1272 and escaped^H4422, and came^H935 to Samuel^H8050 at Ramah^H7414; and he informed^H5046 him of everything^H3605 that Saul^H7586 had done^H6213 to him. And he and Samuel^H8050 went^H1980 and stayed^H3427 in Naioth^H5121.

1Sa 19:19

1Sa 19:19But it was reported to Saul, saying, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.”

1Sa 19:20

1Sa 19:20Then Saul sent messengers to take David, but when they saw the company of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing and presiding over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul; and they also prophesied.

1Sa 19:21

1Sa 19:21When Saul was informed of this, he sent other messengers, but they also prophesied. So Saul sent messengers again the third time, yet they prophesied.

1Sa 19:22

1Sa 19:22Then he went to Ramah himself and came as far as the large well that is in Secu; and he [fn]asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And someone said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.”

1Sa 19:23

1Sa 19:23So he [fn]proceeded there to Naioth in Ramah; but the Spirit of God came upon him also, so that he went along prophesying continually until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

1Sa 19:24

1Sa 19:24He also stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and [fn]lay down [fn]naked all that day and all night. Therefore they say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
