Defeat and Death of Saul and His Sons

(1Sa 31:1–13 )

Now the Philistines^H6430 fought^H3898 against Israel^H3478, and the men^H376 of Israel^H3478 fled^H5127 from^H4480 the Philistines^H6430 but fell^H5307 fatally^H2491 wounded^H2491 on Mount^H2022 Gilboa^H1533.

1Ch 10:2

1Ch 10:2And the Philistines also overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines [fn]killed Jonathan, [fn]Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.

1Ch 10:3

1Ch 10:3The battle became severe against Saul, and the archers found him; and he was wounded by the archers.

1Ch 10:4

1Ch 10:4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised Philistines will come and abuse me.” But his armor bearer would not, for he was very afraid. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.

1Ch 10:5

1Ch 10:5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword and died.

1Ch 10:6

1Ch 10:6So Saul died with his three sons, and all those of his house died together.

1Ch 10:7

When all^H3605 the people^H376 of Israel^H3478 who^H834 were in the valley^H6010 saw^H7200 that they had fled^H5127, and that Saul^H7586 and his sons^H1121 were dead^H4191, they abandoned^H5800 their cities^H5892 and fled^H5127; and the Philistines^H6430 came^H935 and lived^H3427 in them.

1Ch 10:8

It came^H1961 about^H1961 the next^H4283 day^H4283, when the Philistines^H6430 came^H935 to strip^H6584 those killed^H2491, that they found^H4672 Saul^H7586 and his sons^H1121 fallen^H5307 on Mount^H2022 Gilboa^H1533.

1Ch 10:9

1Ch 10:9So they stripped him and took his head and his armor and sent messengers around the land of the Philistines to carry the good news to their idols and to the people.

1Ch 10:10

1Ch 10:10They put his armor in the house of their gods and [fn]impaled his head in the house of Dagon.

Jabesh-gilead’s Tribute to Saul

1Ch 10:11

1Ch 10:11When all Jabesh-gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul,

1Ch 10:12

1Ch 10:12all the valiant men got up and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh; and they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted for seven days.

1Ch 10:13

So Saul^H7586 died^H4191 for his unfaithfulness^H4603^H4604 which^H834 he committed^H4603 against the LORD^H3068, because^H5921 of the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 which^H834 he did not keep^H8104; and also^H1571 because he asked^H7592 counsel of a medium^H178, making^H1875 inquiry^H1875 of her,

1Ch 10:14

1Ch 10:14and did not inquire of the LORD. Therefore He killed him and turned the kingdom over to David, the son of Jesse.
