The Seven Lamps

(Exo 25:31–40 )

Then Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872, saying^H559,

Num 8:2“Speak to Aaron and say to him, ‘When you [fn]mount the lamps, the seven lamps will give light in the front of the lampstand.’”

Num 8:3

Num 8:3Aaron therefore did so; he [fn]mounted its lamps at the front of the lampstand, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

Num 8:4

Num 8:4Now this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold; from its base to its flowers it was hammered work; according to the pattern which Yahweh had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.

Cleansing of the Levites

Num 8:5

Again Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872, saying^H559,

Num 8:6

Num 8:6“Take the Levites from among the sons of Israel and cleanse them.

Num 8:7

Num 8:7“Thus you shall do to them, for their [fn]cleansing: sprinkle [fn]purifying water on them, and let them [fn]use a razor over their whole [fn]body and wash their clothes, and they will be clean.

Num 8:8

Num 8:8“Then let them take a bull from the herd with its grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil; and a second bull from the herd you shall take for a sin offering.

Num 8:9

Num 8:9“So you shall bring the Levites near before the tent of meeting. You shall also assemble the whole congregation of the sons of Israel,

Num 8:10

Num 8:10and bring the Levites near before Yahweh; and the sons of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites.

Num 8:11

Num 8:11“Aaron then shall [fn]present the Levites before Yahweh as a wave offering from the sons of Israel, that they may be qualified to perform the service of Yahweh.

Num 8:12

Num 8:12“Now the Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls; then offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering to Yahweh, to make atonement for the Levites.

Num 8:13

Num 8:13“And you shall have the Levites stand before Aaron and before his sons so as to present them as a wave offering to Yahweh.

Num 8:14

“Thus you shall separate^H914 the Levites^H3881 from among^H8432 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478, and the Levites^H3881 shall be Mine.

Num 8:15

Num 8:15“Then after that the Levites may go in to serve the tent of meeting. But you shall cleanse them and present them as a wave offering;

Num 8:16

Num 8:16for they are wholly given to Me from among the sons of Israel. I have taken them for Myself instead of every first issue of the womb, the firstborn of all the sons of Israel.

Num 8:17

Num 8:17“For every firstborn among the sons of Israel is Mine, among the men and among the animals; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for Myself.

Num 8:18

Num 8:18“But I have taken the Levites instead of every firstborn among the sons of Israel.

Num 8:19

Num 8:19“And I have given the Levites as [fn]a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the sons of Israel, to perform the service of the sons of Israel at the tent of meeting and to make atonement on behalf of the sons of Israel, so that there will be no plague among the sons of Israel by [fn]their coming near to the sanctuary.”

Num 8:20

Thus did^H6213 Moses^H4872 and Aaron^H175 and all^H3605 the congregation^H5712 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 to the Levites^H3881; according to all^H3605 that Yahweh^H3068 had commanded^H6680 Moses^H4872 concerning the Levites^H3881, so^H3651 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 did^H6213 to them.

Num 8:21

Num 8:21The Levites, too, purified themselves from sin and washed their clothes; and Aaron presented them as a wave offering before Yahweh. Aaron also made atonement for them to cleanse them.

Num 8:22

Num 8:22Then after that the Levites went in to perform their service in the tent of meeting before Aaron and before his sons; just as Yahweh had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.

Retirement of the Levites

Num 8:23

Now Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872, saying^H559,

Num 8:24

Num 8:24“This is what applies to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward [fn]they shall enter to perform their duty in the service of the tent of meeting.

Num 8:25

Num 8:25“But at the age of fifty years they shall [fn]retire from their duty in the service and not serve anymore.

Num 8:26

Num 8:26“They may, however, minister to their brothers in the tent of meeting in order to keep up their responsibility, but they themselves shall perform no service. Thus you shall deal with the Levites concerning their responsibilities.”
