Duties of the Kohathites

Then Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872 and to Aaron^H175, saying^H559,

Num 4:2“Take [fn]a census of the [fn]descendants of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ households,

Num 4:3

Num 4:3from thirty years and upward, even to fifty years old, all who enter the duty of doing the work in the tent of meeting.

Num 4:4

Num 4:4“This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, concerning the most holy things.

Num 4:5

“And when the camp^H4264 sets^H5265 out^H5265, Aaron^H175 and his sons^H1121 shall go^H935 in^H935 and they shall take^H3381 down^H3381 the veil^H6532 of the screen^H4539 and cover^H3680 the ark^H727 of the testimony^H5715 with it;

Num 4:6

Num 4:6and they shall put a covering of porpoise skin on it and shall spread over it a cloth of pure [fn]blue and shall insert its poles.

Num 4:7

Num 4:7“Over the table of the bread of the Presence they shall also spread a cloth of [fn]blue and put on it the dishes and the pans and the offering bowls and the jars for the drink offering, and the continual bread shall be on it.

Num 4:8

Num 4:8“And they shall spread over them a cloth of scarlet material and cover the same with a covering of porpoise skin, and they shall insert its poles.

Num 4:9

Num 4:9“Then they shall take a [fn]blue cloth and cover the lampstand for the light, along with its lamps and its tongs, and its [fn]trays and all its oil vessels, by which they minister in connection to it;

Num 4:10

Num 4:10and they shall put it and all its utensils in a covering of porpoise skin and shall put it on the carrying bars.

Num 4:11

Num 4:11“And over the golden altar they shall spread a [fn]blue cloth and cover it with a covering of porpoise skin and shall insert its poles;

Num 4:12

Num 4:12and they shall take all the utensils of ministry, with which they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a [fn]blue cloth and cover them with a covering of porpoise skin and put them on the carrying bars.

Num 4:13

Num 4:13“Then they shall take away the [fn]ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it.

Num 4:14

Num 4:14“They shall also put on it all its utensils by which they minister in connection with it: the firepans, the flesh hooks and shovels and the bowls, all the utensils of the altar; and they shall spread a cover of porpoise skin over it and insert its poles.

Num 4:15

Num 4:15“When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy objects and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is to set out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them, so that they will not touch the holy objects and die. These are the [fn]things in the tent of meeting which the sons of Kohath are to carry.

Num 4:16

“And the assignment^H6486 of Eleazar^H499 the son^H1121 of Aaron^H175 the priest^H3548 is the oil^H8081 for the light^H3974 and the fragrant^H5561 incense^H7004 and the continual^H8548 grain offering^H4503 and the anointing^H4888 oil^H8081—the assignment^H6486 of all^H3605 the [fn]tabernacle^H4908 and of all^H3605 that is in it, with the sanctuary^H6944 and its furnishings^H3627.”

Num 4:17

Then Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872 and to Aaron^H175, saying^H559,

Num 4:18

Num 4:18“Do not let the tribe of the families of the Kohathites be cut off from among the Levites.

Num 4:19

Num 4:19“But do this to them that they may live and not die when they approach the most holy objects: Aaron and his sons shall go in and set each of them to his service and to his load;

Num 4:20

Num 4:20but they shall not go in to see the holy objects even for a moment, or they will die.”

Duties of the Gershonites

Num 4:21

Then Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872, saying^H559,

Num 4:22

Num 4:22“Take [fn]a census of the sons of Gershon [fn]also, by their fathers’ households, by their families;

Num 4:23

Num 4:23from thirty years and upward to fifty years old, you shall [fn]number them; all who enter to perform the duty of performing the service in the tent of meeting.

Num 4:24

Num 4:24“This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in carrying:

Num 4:25

Num 4:25they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting with its covering and the covering of porpoise skin that is on top of it, and the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting,

Num 4:26

Num 4:26and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the gate of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and their cords and all the equipment for their service; and all that is to be done, [fn]they shall perform.

Num 4:27

Num 4:27“All the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their loads and in all their service, shall be performed at the [fn]command of Aaron and his sons; and you shall assign to them as a responsibility all their loads.

Num 4:28

Num 4:28“This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting, and their responsibilities shall be [fn]under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

Duties of the Merarites

Num 4:29

“As for the sons^H1121 of Merari^H4847, you shall number^H6485 them by their families^H4940, by their fathers’^H1 households^H1004;

Num 4:30

Num 4:30from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, you shall number them, everyone who enters the duty of performing the service of the tent of meeting.

Num 4:31

Num 4:31“Now this is the responsibility of their loads, for all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle and its bars and its pillars and its bases,

Num 4:32

Num 4:32and the pillars around the court and their bases and their pegs and their cords, with all their equipment and with all their service; and you shall assign each man by name the items of the responsibility of [fn]his load.

Num 4:33

Num 4:33“This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service in the tent of meeting, [fn]under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

Num 4:34

So Moses^H4872 and Aaron^H175 and the leaders^H5387 of the congregation^H5712 numbered^H6485 the sons^H1121 of the Kohathites^H6956 by their families^H4940 and by their fathers’^H1 households^H1004,

Num 4:35

Num 4:35from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the duty of service in the tent of meeting.

Num 4:36

Num 4:36Their numbered men by their families were 2,750.

Num 4:37

Num 4:37These are the numbered men of the Kohathite families, everyone who was serving in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the [fn]commandment of Yahweh by the hand of Moses.

Num 4:38

The numbered^H6485 men of the sons^H1121 of Gershon^H1648 by their families^H4940 and by their fathers’^H1 households^H1004,

Num 4:39

Num 4:39from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the duty of service in the tent of meeting,

Num 4:40

Num 4:40their numbered men by their families, by their fathers’ households, were 2,630.

Num 4:41

Num 4:41These are the numbered men of the families of the sons of Gershon, everyone who was serving in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the [fn]commandment of Yahweh.

Num 4:42

The numbered^H6485 men of the families^H4940 of the sons^H1121 of Merari^H4847 by their families^H4940, by their fathers’^H1 households^H1004,

Num 4:43

Num 4:43from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the duty of service in the tent of meeting,

Num 4:44

Num 4:44their numbered men by their families were 3,200.

Num 4:45

Num 4:45These are the numbered men of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the [fn]commandment of Yahweh by the hand of Moses.

Num 4:46

All^H3605 the numbered^H6485 men of the Levites^H3881, whom^H834 Moses^H4872 and Aaron^H175 and the leaders^H5387 of Israel^H3478 numbered^H6485, by their families^H4940 and by their fathers’^H1 households^H1004,

Num 4:47

Num 4:47from thirty years and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who could enter to perform the work of service and the service of carrying in the tent of meeting,

Num 4:48

Num 4:48their numbered men were 8,580.

Num 4:49

Num 4:49According to the [fn]word of Yahweh by the hand of Moses, they were numbered, everyone by his serving or carrying; thus these were his numbered men, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
