Inheritance Through Marriage

And the heads^H7218 of the fathers’^H1 households of the family^H4940 of the sons^H1121 of Gilead^H1568, the son^H1121 of Machir^H4353, the son^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519, of the families^H4940 of the sons^H1121 of Joseph^H3130, came^H7126 near^H7126 and spoke^H1696 before^H6440 Moses^H4872 and before^H6440 the leaders^H5387, the heads^H7218 of the fathers’^H1 households of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478,

Num 36:2

Num 36:2and they said, “Yahweh commanded my lord to give the land by lot to the sons of Israel as an inheritance, and my lord was commanded by Yahweh to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

Num 36:3

Num 36:3“But if they [fn]marry one of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of our fathers and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; thus it will be withdrawn from our allotted inheritance.

Num 36:4

Num 36:4“And when the jubilee of the sons of Israel [fn]comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; so their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

Num 36:5

Then Moses^H4872 commanded^H6680 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 according^H5921 to the [fn]word^H6310 of Yahweh^H3068, saying^H559, “The tribe^H4294 of the sons^H1121 of Joseph^H3130 are right^H3651 in their statements^H1696.

Num 36:6

Num 36:6“This is [fn]what Yahweh has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry whoever is good in their sight; only they must marry within the family of the tribe of their father.’

Num 36:7

Num 36:7“Thus no inheritance of the sons of Israel shall [fn]be transferred from tribe to tribe, for the sons of Israel shall each [fn]hold to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

Num 36:8

Num 36:8“And every daughter who comes into possession of an inheritance of any tribe of the sons of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that the sons of Israel each may possess the inheritance of his fathers.

Num 36:9

Num 36:9“Thus no inheritance shall [fn]be transferred from one tribe to another tribe, for the tribes of the sons of Israel shall each [fn]hold to his own inheritance.”

Num 36:10

Just^H834 as Yahweh^H3068 had commanded^H6680 Moses^H4872, so^H3651 the daughters^H1323 of Zelophehad^H6765 did^H6213:

Num 36:11

Num 36:11And Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad married their uncles’ sons.

Num 36:12

Num 36:12They married those from the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance [fn]remained with the tribe of the family of their father.

Num 36:13

These^H428 are the commandments^H4687 and the judgments^H4941 which^H834 Yahweh^H3068 commanded^H6680 to the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 by the hand^H3027 of Moses^H4872 in the plains^H6160 of Moab^H4124 by the Jordan^H3383 opposite Jericho^H3405.
