Israel Sacrifices to Baal

And Israel^H3478 remained^H3427 at Shittim^H7851, and the people^H5971 began^H2490 to play^H2181 the^H2181 harlot^H2181 with the daughters^H1323 of Moab^H4124.

Num 25:2

Num 25:2Indeed they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

Num 25:3

Num 25:3So Israel joined themselves to [fn]Baal of Peor, and the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel.

Num 25:4

Num 25:4And Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all who are the heads of the people and execute them [fn]in broad daylight before Yahweh, so that the burning anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.”

Num 25:5So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you kill his men who have joined themselves to [fn]Baal of Peor.”

Num 25:6

Then behold^H2009, one^H376 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 came^H935 and brought^H7126 near^H7126 to his brothers^H251 a Midianite^H4084 woman^H4084, in the sight^H5869 of Moses^H4872 and in the sight^H5869 of all^H3605 the congregation^H5712 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478, while they were weeping^H1058 at the doorway^H6607 of the tent^H168 of meeting^H4150.

Num 25:7

Num 25:7And Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, so he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand,

Num 25:8

Num 25:8and he went after the man of Israel into the [fn]tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the [fn]body. Then the plague on the sons of Israel was checked.

Num 25:9

Num 25:9So those who died by the plague were 24,000.

The Jealousy of Phinehas

Num 25:10

Num 25:11

Num 25:11“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned away My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the sons of Israel in My jealousy.

Num 25:12

Num 25:12“Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give him My covenant of peace;

Num 25:13

Num 25:13and it shall be for him and his seed after him, a covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel.’”

Num 25:14

Now the name^H8034 of the [fn]slain^H5221 man^H376 of Israel^H3478 who^H834 was [fn]slain^H5221 with the Midianite^H4084 woman^H4084, was Zimri^H2174 the son^H1121 of Salu^H5543, a leader^H5387 of a father’s^H1 household^H1004 among the Simeonites^H8099.

Num 25:15

Num 25:15And the name of the Midianite woman, who was struck down, was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, [fn]who was head of the people of a father’s household in Midian.

Num 25:16

Then Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872, saying^H559,

Num 25:17

Num 25:17“Be hostile to the Midianites and strike them,

Num 25:18

Num 25:18for they have been hostile to you with their deceptive tricks, with which they have deceived you in the affair of Peor and in the affair of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was slain on the day of the plague because of Peor.”
