God’s Hand Was on Nehemiah

Now it happened^H1961 in the month^H2320 Nisan^H5212, in the twentieth^H6242 year^H8141 of King^H4428 Artaxerxes^H783, that wine^H3196 was before^H6440 him, and I took^H5375 up^H5375 the wine^H3196 and gave^H5414 it to the king^H4428. Now I had not been^H1961 sad^H7451 in his presence^H6440.

Neh 2:2

Neh 2:2So the king said to me, “Why is your face sad though you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.

Neh 2:3

Neh 2:3I said to the king, “Let the king live forever. Why should my face not be sad when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste and its gates have been consumed by fire?”

Neh 2:4

Neh 2:4Then the king said to me, “What would you request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.

Neh 2:5

Neh 2:5I said to the king, “If it is good for the king, and if your servant is good before you, send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may rebuild it.”

Neh 2:6

Neh 2:6Then the king said to me, the queen sitting beside him, “How long will your journey be, and when will you return?” So it was good to the king to send me, and I gave him a set time.

Neh 2:7

Neh 2:7And I said to the king, “If it is good to the king, let letters be given me for the governors of the provinces beyond the [fn]River, that they may allow me to pass through until I come to Judah,

Neh 2:8

Neh 2:8and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress which is by the house of God, for the wall of the city and for the house to which I will go.” And the king granted them to me because the good hand of my God was on me.

Neh 2:9

Then I came^H935 to the governors^H6346 of the provinces beyond^H5676 the River^H5104 and gave^H5414 them the king’s^H4428 letters^H107. Now the king^H4428 had sent^H7971 with me commanders^H8269 of the military^H2428 force^H2428 and horsemen^H6571.

Neh 2:10

Neh 2:10Then Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite [fn]official heard about it, and it was a very great evil to them that someone had come to seek the good of the sons of Israel.

Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem’s Walls

Neh 2:11

So I came^H935 to Jerusalem^H3389 and was there^H8033 three^H7969 days^H3117.

Neh 2:12

Neh 2:12And I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. I did not tell anyone what my God was putting into my heart to do for Jerusalem; and there was no animal with me except the animal on which I was riding.

Neh 2:13

Neh 2:13So I went out at night by the Valley Gate in the direction of the Dragon’s Spring and on to the [fn]Dung Gate, inspecting the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which were consumed by fire.

Neh 2:14

Neh 2:14Then I passed on to the Spring Gate and the King’s Pool, but there was no place for [fn]my animal to pass.

Neh 2:15

Neh 2:15So I went up at night by the ravine and inspected the wall. Then I turned and entered the Valley Gate and turned around.

Neh 2:16

Neh 2:16Now the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing; nor had I as yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, or the rest who were doing the work.

Neh 2:17

Then I said^H559 to them, “You see^H7200 the calamity^H7451 we are in, that Jerusalem^H3389 lies waste^H2720 and its gates^H8179 burned^H3341 by fire^H784. Come^H1980, let us rebuild^H1129 the wall^H2346 of Jerusalem^H3389 so that we will no^H3808 longer^H5750 be a reproach^H2781.”

Neh 2:18

Neh 2:18And I told them how the hand of my God had been good to me and also about the king’s words which he had said to me. Then they said, “Let us arise and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

Neh 2:19

Neh 2:19But Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite [fn]official and Geshem the Arab heard it. And they mocked us and despised us and said, “What is this thing you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”

Neh 2:20

Neh 2:20So I responded to them with a word and said to them, “The God of heaven will give us success; therefore we His slaves will arise and build, but you have no portion, right, or remembrance in Jerusalem.”
