The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

(Luk 6:20–26 )

Mat 5:2

Mat 5:2And He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

Mat 5:3

“[fn]Blessed^G3107 are the [fn]poor^G4434 in spirit^G4151, for theirs^G846 is the kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772.

Mat 5:4

Blessed^G3107 are those^G3588 who mourn^G3996, for they shall be comforted^G3870.

Mat 5:5

Blessed^G3107 are the [fn]lowly^G4239, for they shall inherit^G2816 the earth^G1093.

Mat 5:6

Blessed^G3107 are those^G3588 who hunger^G3983 and thirst^G1372 for righteousness^G1343, for they shall be satisfied^G5526.

Mat 5:7

Blessed^G3107 are the merciful^G1655, for they shall receive^G1653 mercy^G1653.

Mat 5:8

Blessed^G3107 are the pure^G2513 in heart^G2588, for they shall see^G3708 God^G2316.

Mat 5:9

Blessed^G3107 are the peacemakers^G1518, for they shall be called^G2564 sons^G5207 of God^G2316.

Mat 5:10

Blessed^G3107 are those^G3588 who have been persecuted^G1377 for the sake^G6025 of righteousness^G1343, for theirs^G846 is the kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772.

Mat 5:11

“Blessed^G3107 are you when^G3752 people insult^G3679 you and persecute^G1377 you, and falsely^G5574 say^G3004 all^G3956 kinds^G3956 of evil^G4190 against^G2596 you because^G6025 of Me.

Mat 5:12

Mat 5:12“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

(Mar 9:50; Luk 14:34, 35 )

Mat 5:13

“You are the salt^G217 of the earth^G1093; but if^G1437 the salt^G217 has become^G3471 tasteless^G3471, how^G1722^G5101 will it be made^G233 salty^G233 again? It is^G2480 no^G3762 longer^G2089 good^G2480 for anything^G3762, except^G1508 to be thrown^G906 out to be trampled^G2662 under^G2662 foot^G2662 by men^G444.

Mat 5:14

“You are the light^G5457 of the world^G2889. A city^G4172 set^G2749 on a [fn]hill^G3735 cannot^G1410^G3756 be hidden^G2928;

Mat 5:15

Mat 5:15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a [fn]basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

Mat 5:16

Mat 5:16“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Mat 5:17

“Do not think^G3543 that I came^G2064 to abolish^G2647 the Law^G3551 or^G2228 the Prophets^G4396; I did not come^G2064 to abolish^G2647 but to fulfill^G4137.

Mat 5:18

Mat 5:18“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not [fn]the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

Mat 5:19

Mat 5:19“Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches [fn]others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 5:20

“For I say^G3004 to you that unless^G1437^G3361 your righteousness^G1343 surpasses^G4052 that of the scribes^G1122 and Pharisees^G5330, you will not enter^G1525 the kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772.

Mat 5:21

“You have heard^G191 that [fn]the ancients^G744 were told^G3004, ‘YOU SHALL NOT MURDER^G5407’ and ‘Whoever^G3739^G302 murders^G5407 shall be guilty^G1777 before the court^G2920.’

Mat 5:22

Mat 5:22“But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘[fn]Raca,’ shall be guilty before the [fn]Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the [fn]fiery hell.

Mat 5:23

Mat 5:23“Therefore if you are presenting your [fn]offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,

Mat 5:24

Mat 5:24leave your [fn]offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your [fn]offering.

Mat 5:25

Mat 5:25“Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.

Mat 5:26

Mat 5:26“Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last [fn]quadrans.

Mat 5:27

“You have heard^G191 that it was said^G3004, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT^G3431 ADULTERY^G3431’;

Mat 5:28

Mat 5:28but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Mat 5:29

Mat 5:29“But if your right eye makes you [fn]stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you [fn]to lose one of the parts of your body, [fn]than for your whole body to be thrown into [fn]hell.

Mat 5:30

Mat 5:30“And if your right hand makes you [fn]stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you [fn]to lose one of the parts of your body, [fn]than for your whole body to go into [fn]hell.

Mat 5:31

Mat 5:32

Mat 5:32but I say to you that everyone who [fn]divorces his wife, except for the reason of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a [fn]divorced woman commits adultery.

Mat 5:33

“Again^G3825, you have heard^G191 that [fn]the ancients^G744 were told^G3004, ‘[fn]YOU SHALL NOT [fn]MAKE^G1964 FALSE^G1964 VOWS^G1964, BUT SHALL FULFILL^G591 YOUR [fn]VOWS^G3727 TO THE [fn]LORD^G2962.’

Mat 5:34

Mat 5:34“But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,

Mat 5:35

Mat 5:35or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or [fn]by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING.

Mat 5:36

Mat 5:36“Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

Mat 5:37

Mat 5:37“But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is [fn]of the evil one.

Mat 5:39

Mat 5:39“But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

Mat 5:40

Mat 5:40“And if anyone wants to sue you and take your [fn]tunic, let him have your [fn]garment also.

Mat 5:44

Mat 5:44“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Mat 5:45so that you may [fn]be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
