The Temptation of Jesus

(Mar 1:12, 13; Luk 4:1–13 )

Then^G5119 Jesus^G2424 was led^G321 up^G321 by the Spirit^G4151 into the wilderness^G2048 to be tempted^G3985 by the devil^G1228.

Mat 4:2

Mat 4:2And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He [fn]then became hungry.

Mat 4:3

Mat 4:3And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Mat 4:4

Mat 4:4But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’”

Mat 4:5

Then^G5119 the devil^G1228 *took^G3880 Him into the holy^G40 city^G4172 and had Him stand^G2476 on the pinnacle^G4419 of the temple^G2413,

Mat 4:6

Mat 4:6and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,

‘HE WILL COMMAND^G1781 HIS ANGELS^G32 CONCERNING^G4012 YOU’;

and

‘ON their HANDS^G5495 THEY WILL BEAR^G142 YOU UP,

LEST^G3379 YOU STRIKE^G4350 YOUR FOOT^G4228 AGAINST^G4314 A STONE^G3037.’”

Mat 4:7

Jesus^G2424 said^G5346 to him, “Again^G3825, it is written^G1125, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT^G1598 THE [fn]LORD^G2962 YOUR GOD^G2316 TO^G1598 THE^G1598 TEST^G1598.’”

Mat 4:8

Again^G3825, the devil^G1228 *took^G3880 Him to a very^G3029 high^G5308 mountain^G3735 and *showed^G1166 Him all^G3956 the kingdoms^G932 of the world^G2889 and their glory^G1391;

Mat 4:9

Mat 4:9and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [fn]worship me.”

Mat 4:10

Mat 4:10Then Jesus *said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE [fn]LORD YOUR GOD, AND [fn]SERVE HIM ONLY.’”

Mat 4:11

Mat 4:11Then the devil *left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

Mat 4:12

Now^G1161 when Jesus heard^G191 that John^G2491 had been taken^G3860 into^G3860 custody^G3860, He departed^G402 into Galilee^G1056;

Mat 4:13

Mat 4:13and leaving Nazareth, He came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,

Mat 4:14

Mat 4:14in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,

Mat 4:15

“THE LAND^G1093 OF ZEBULUN^G2194 AND THE LAND^G1093 OF NAPHTALI^G3508,

[fn]BY THE WAY^G3598 OF THE SEA^G2281, BEYOND^G4008 THE JORDAN^G2446, GALILEE^G1056 OF THE [fn]GENTILES^G1484—

Mat 4:16

THE PEOPLE^G2992 WHO WERE SITTING^G2521 IN DARKNESS^G4653 SAW^G3708 A GREAT^G3173 LIGHT^G5457,

AND THOSE^G3588 WHO WERE SITTING^G2521 IN THE LAND^G5561 AND SHADOW^G4639 OF DEATH^G2288,

UPON THEM A LIGHT^G5457 DAWNED^G393.”

Mat 4:17

From that time^G5119 Jesus^G2424 began^G757 to [fn]preach^G2784 and say^G3004, “Repent^G3340, for the kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772 is^G1448 at^G1448 hand^G1448.”

The First Disciples

Mat 4:18

Now as Jesus was walking^G4043 by the Sea^G2281 of Galilee^G1056, He saw^G3708 two^G1417 brothers^G80, Simon^G4613 who was called^G3004 Peter^G4074, and Andrew^G406 his brother^G80, casting^G906 a net^G293 into the sea^G2281; for they were fishermen^G231.

Mat 4:19

Mat 4:19And He *said to them, “[fn]Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Mat 4:20

Mat 4:20And immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

Mat 4:21

Mat 4:21And going on from there He saw two other brothers, [fn]James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them.

Mat 4:22

Mat 4:22And immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Ministry in Galilee

(Mar 1:35–39; Luk 4:44; 6:17–19 )

Mat 4:23

And Jesus was going^G4013 throughout^G4013 all^G3650 Galilee^G1056, teaching^G1321 in their synagogues^G4864 and preaching^G2784 the [fn]gospel^G2098 of the kingdom^G932, and healing^G2323 every^G3956 kind^G3956 of disease^G3554 and every^G3956 kind^G3956 of sickness^G3119 among^G1722 the people^G2992.

Mat 4:24

And the news^G189 about Him spread^G565 throughout^G1519 all^G3650 Syria^G4947; and they brought^G4374 to Him all^G3956 who were ill^G2192^G2560, those suffering^G4912 with various^G4164 diseases^G3554 and pains^G931, demoniacs^G1139, [fn]epileptics^G4583, paralytics^G3885; and He healed^G2323 them.
