The Preaching of John the Baptist

Mat 3:2

Mat 3:2“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven [fn]is at hand.”

Mat 3:3

Mat 3:3For this is the one referred to [fn]by Isaiah the prophet, saying,

“THE VOICE^G5456 OF ONE [fn]CRYING^G994 IN THE WILDERNESS^G2048,

‘MAKE^G2090 READY^G2090 THE WAY^G3598 OF THE [fn]LORD^G2962,

MAKE^G4160 HIS PATHS^G5147 STRAIGHT^G2117!’”

Mat 3:4

Now^G1161 John^G2491 himself^G846 had^G2192 [fn]a garment^G1742 of camel’s^G2574 hair^G2359 and a leather^G1193 belt^G2223 around^G4012 his waist^G3751; and his food^G5160 was locusts^G200 and wild^G66 honey^G3192.

Mat 3:5

Mat 3:5Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea, and all the district around the Jordan;

Mat 3:6

Mat 3:6and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.

Mat 3:7

Mat 3:8

Mat 3:8“Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;

Mat 3:9

Mat 3:9and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father’; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.

Mat 3:10

Mat 3:10“And the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Mat 3:11

“As for me, I baptize^G907 you with water^G5204 for repentance^G3341, but He who is coming^G2064 after^G3694 me is mightier^G2478 than I, and I am^G1510 not fit^G2425 to remove^G941 His sandals^G5266; He will baptize^G907 you with the Holy^G40 Spirit^G4151 and fire^G4442.

Mat 3:12

Mat 3:12“His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Mat 3:13

Mat 3:14

Mat 3:14But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”

Mat 3:15

Mat 3:15But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *permitted Him.

Mat 3:16

Mat 3:16And after being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and [fn]he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him,
