The Visit of the Magi

Now^G1161 after Jesus^G2424 was born^G1080 in Bethlehem^G965 of Judea^G2449 in the days^G2250 of Herod^G2264 the king^G935, behold^G2400, [fn]magi^G3097 from the east^G395 arrived^G3854 in Jerusalem^G2414, saying^G3004,

Mat 2:2

Mat 2:2“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”

Mat 2:3

Mat 2:3And when Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

Mat 2:4

Mat 2:4And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he was inquiring of them where the [fn]Christ was to be born.

Mat 2:5

Mat 2:5And they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written [fn]by the prophet:

Mat 2:6

‘AND YOU, BETHLEHEM^G965, LAND^G1093 OF JUDAH^G2455,

ARE BY NO^G3760 MEANS^G3760 LEAST^G1646 AMONG^G1722 THE LEADERS^G2233 OF JUDAH^G2455;

FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME^G1831 FORTH^G1831 A LEADER^G2233

WHO^G3748 WILL SHEPHERD^G4165 MY PEOPLE^G2992 ISRAEL^G2474.’”

Mat 2:7

Then^G5119 Herod^G2264 secretly^G2977 called^G2564 the magi^G3097 and carefully^G198 determined^G198 from them [fn]the time^G5550 the star^G792 appeared^G5316.

Mat 2:8

Mat 2:8And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.”

Mat 2:9

Mat 2:9Now after hearing the king, they went their way; and behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, was going on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was.

Mat 2:10

Mat 2:10And when they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

Mat 2:11

Mat 2:11And after coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they [fn]fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Mat 2:12

Mat 2:12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi departed for their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

Mat 2:13

Now^G1161 when they had departed^G402, behold^G2400, an angel^G32 of the [fn]Lord^G2962 *appeared^G5316 to Joseph^G2501 in a dream^G3677, saying^G3004, “Get^G1453 up^G1453! Take^G3880 the Child^G3813 and His mother^G3384 and flee^G5343 to Egypt^G125, and remain^G1510 there^G1563 until^G2193 I tell^G3004 you; for Herod^G2264 is^G3195 going^G3195 to^G3195 search^G2212 for^G2212 the Child^G3813 to destroy^G622 Him.”

Mat 2:14

So^G1161 [fn]Joseph got^G1453 up^G1453 and took^G3880 the Child^G3813 and His mother^G3384 while it was still night^G3571, and departed^G402 for Egypt^G125.

Mat 2:15

Mat 2:15And he [fn]remained there until the death of Herod, in order that what had been spoken by the [fn]Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, “OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON.”

Herod Slaughters Children

Mat 2:16

Then^G5119 when Herod^G2264 saw^G3708 that he had been tricked^G1702 by the magi^G3097, he became very^G3029 enraged^G2373, and sent^G649 and slew^G337 all^G3956 the male^G3816 children^G3816 who were in Bethlehem^G965 and all^G3956 its vicinity^G3725, from two^G1332 years^G1332 old^G1332 and under^G2737, according^G2596 to the time^G5550 which^G3739 he had carefully^G198 determined^G198 from the magi^G3097.

Mat 2:17

Mat 2:17Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,

Mat 2:18

“A VOICE^G5456 WAS HEARD^G191 IN RAMAH^G4471,

WEEPING^G2805 AND GREAT^G4183 MOURNING^G3602,

RACHEL^G4478 WEEPING^G2805 FOR HER CHILDREN^G5043;

AND SHE WAS REFUSING^G3756^G2309 TO BE COMFORTED^G3870,

BECAUSE^G3754 THEY WERE NO^G3756 MORE.”

Mat 2:19

But when Herod^G2264 died^G5053, behold^G2400, an angel^G32 of the [fn]Lord^G2962 *appeared^G5316 in a dream^G3677 to Joseph^G2501 in Egypt^G125, saying^G3004,

Mat 2:20

Mat 2:20“Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”

Mat 2:21

Mat 2:21So [fn]Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

Mat 2:22

Mat 2:22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he departed for the district of Galilee,

Mat 2:23

Mat 2:23and came and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: “He shall be called a Nazarene.”
