The Parable of the Sower

(Mar 4:1–9; Luk 8:4–8 )

On^G1722 that day^G2250 Jesus^G2424 went^G1831 out^G1831 of the house^G3614 and was sitting^G2521 by the sea^G2281.

Mat 13:2And [fn]large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach.

Mat 13:3

And He spoke^G2980 many^G4183 things^G4183 to them in parables^G3850, saying^G3004, “Behold^G2400, the sower^G4687 went^G1831 out^G1831 to sow^G4687;

Mat 13:4

Mat 13:4and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up.

Mat 13:5

Mat 13:5“And others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil.

Mat 13:6

Mat 13:6“But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

Mat 13:7

Mat 13:7“And others fell [fn]among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out.

Mat 13:8

Mat 13:8“And others fell on the good soil and were yielding [fn]a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.

Mat 13:9

Mat 13:9“He who has ears, [fn]let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

(Mar 4:10–12; Luk 8:9, 10 )

Mat 13:10

And the disciples^G3101 came^G4334 and said^G3004 to Him, “Why^G1223^G5101 do You speak^G2980 to them in parables^G3850?”

Mat 13:11

Mat 13:11And [fn]Jesus answered and said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

Mat 13:12

Mat 13:12“For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.

Mat 13:13

Mat 13:13“Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

Mat 13:14

Mat 13:14“And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,

‘[fn]YOU WILL KEEP^G189 ON HEARING^G191, [fn]BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND^G4920;

[fn]YOU WILL KEEP^G991 ON SEEING^G991, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE^G3708;

Mat 13:15

FOR THE HEART^G2588 OF THIS^G3778 PEOPLE^G2992 HAS BECOME^G3975 DULL^G3975,

AND^G2532 WITH THEIR EARS^G3775 THEY SCARCELY^G917 HEAR^G191,

AND THEY HAVE CLOSED^G2576 THEIR EYES^G3788,

LEST^G3379 THEY WOULD SEE^G3708 WITH THEIR EYES^G3788,

HEAR^G191 WITH THEIR EARS^G3775,

AND UNDERSTAND^G4920 WITH THEIR HEART^G2588 AND RETURN^G1994,

AND I WOULD HEAL^G2390 THEM.’

Mat 13:16

“But blessed^G3107 are your eyes^G3788, because^G3754 they see^G991; and your ears^G3775, because^G3754 they hear^G191.

Mat 13:17

Mat 13:17“For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The Parable of the Sower Explained

(Mar 4:13–20; Luk 8:11–15 )

Mat 13:18

“Hear^G191 then^G3767 the parable^G3850 of the sower^G4687.

Mat 13:19

Mat 13:19“When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.

Mat 13:20

Mat 13:20“And the one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;

Mat 13:21

Mat 13:21yet he has no root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he [fn]falls away.

Mat 13:22

Mat 13:22“And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, and the worry of the [fn]world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Mat 13:23

Mat 13:23“And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”

The Parable of Tares Among Wheat

Mat 13:24

He presented^G3908 another^G243 parable^G3850 to them, saying^G3004, “The kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772 [fn]may be compared^G3666 to a man^G444 who sowed^G4687 good^G2570 seed^G4690 in^G68 his field^G68.

Mat 13:25

Mat 13:25“But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed [fn]tares among the wheat, and went away.

Mat 13:26

Mat 13:26“But when the [fn]wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also.

Mat 13:27

Mat 13:27“The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? [fn]How then does it have tares?’

Mat 13:28

Mat 13:28“And he said to them, ‘An [fn]enemy has done this!’ The slaves *said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’

Mat 13:29

Mat 13:29“But he *said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them.

Mat 13:30

Mat 13:30‘Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

Parables of the Mustard Seed and Leaven

Mat 13:31

Mat 13:32

Mat 13:32and this is the [fn]smallest of all seeds, but when it is fully grown, it is the [fn]largest of the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE [fn]AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES.”

Mat 13:33

He spoke^G2980 another^G243 parable^G3850 to them, “The kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772 is like^G3664 leaven^G2219, which^G3739 a woman^G1135 took^G2983 and hid^G1470 in [fn]three^G5140 sata^G4568 of flour^G224 until^G2193 it was all^G3650 leavened^G2220.”

Mat 13:34

All^G3956 these^G3778 things^G3778 Jesus^G2424 spoke^G2980 to the crowds^G3793 in parables^G3850, and He was not speaking^G2980 to them without^G5565 a parable^G3850

Mat 13:35

Mat 13:35so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying,

“I WILL OPEN^G455 MY MOUTH^G4750 IN PARABLES^G3850;

I WILL UTTER^G2044 THINGS^G2928 HIDDEN^G2928 SINCE^G575 THE FOUNDATION^G2602 OF THE WORLD^G2889.”

The Parable of Tares Explained

Mat 13:36

Then^G5119 He left^G863 the crowds^G3793 and went^G2064 into the house^G3614. And His disciples^G3101 came^G4334 to Him and said^G3004, “Explain^G1285 to us the parable^G3850 of the [fn]tares^G2215 of^G68 the^G68 field^G68.”

Mat 13:37

Mat 13:37And He answered and said, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man,

Mat 13:38

Mat 13:38and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil one;

Mat 13:39

Mat 13:39and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the [fn]end of the age; and the reapers are angels.

Mat 13:40

Mat 13:40“So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the [fn]end of the age.

Mat 13:41

Mat 13:41“The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom [fn]all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness,

Mat 13:42

Mat 13:42and will throw them into the fiery furnace; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mat 13:43

Mat 13:43“Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, [fn]let him hear.

A Hidden Treasure

Mat 13:44

“The kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772 is like^G3664 a treasure^G2344 hidden^G2928 in^G68 the^G68 field^G68, which^G3739 a man^G444 found^G2147 and hid^G2928 again; and from joy^G5479 over it he goes^G5217 and sells^G4453 all^G3745 that he has^G2192 and buys^G59 that field^G68.

A Costly Pearl

Mat 13:45

“Again^G3825, the kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772 is like^G3664 a merchant^G1713 seeking^G2212 fine^G2570 pearls^G3135,

Mat 13:46

Mat 13:46and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

A Dragnet

Mat 13:47

“Again^G3825, the kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772 is like^G3664 a dragnet^G4522 cast^G906 into the sea^G2281, and gathering^G4863 fish of every^G3956 kind^G1085;

Mat 13:48

Mat 13:48and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away.

Mat 13:49

Mat 13:49“So it will be at the [fn]end of the age; the angels will come forth and [fn]take out the wicked from among the righteous,

Mat 13:50

Mat 13:50and will throw them into the fiery furnace; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mat 13:51

“Have you understood^G4920 all^G3956 these^G3778 things^G3778?” They *said^G3004 to Him, “Yes^G3483.”

Mat 13:52

Mat 13:52And He said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

(Mar 6:1–6; Luk 4:16–30 )

Mat 13:53

[fn]Now^G2532 it happened^G1096 that when^G3753 Jesus^G2424 had finished^G5055 these^G3778 parables^G3850, He departed^G3332 from^G1564 there^G1564.

Mat 13:54

Mat 13:54And He came to [fn]His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these [fn]miraculous powers?

Mat 13:55

Mat 13:55“Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

Mat 13:56

Mat 13:56“And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”

Mat 13:57

Mat 13:57And they were taking offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his [fn]hometown and in his own household.”
