The Parable of the Sower

(Mat 13:1–9; Luk 8:4–8 )

And He began^G757 to teach^G1321 again^G3825 by the sea^G2281. And such a very^G4183 large^G4183 crowd^G3793 gathered^G4863 to Him that He got^G1684 into a boat^G4143 in the sea^G2281 and sat^G2521 down^G2521; and the whole^G3956 crowd^G3793 was by the sea^G2281 on the land^G1093.

Mar 4:2

Mar 4:2And He was teaching them many things in parables, and was saying to them in His teaching,

Mar 4:3

Mar 4:3“Listen to this! Behold, the sower went out to sow;

Mar 4:4

Mar 4:4and it happened that as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up.

Mar 4:5

Mar 4:5“And other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil.

Mar 4:6

Mar 4:6“And after the sun rose, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

Mar 4:7

Mar 4:7“And other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it yielded no [fn]crop.

Mar 4:8

Mar 4:8“And other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they were yielding a [fn]crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.”

Mar 4:9

Mar 4:9And He was saying, “He who has ears to hear, [fn]let him hear.”

Mar 4:10

And when^G3753 He was alone^G3441, [fn]His followers^G3588^G4012, along^G4862 with the twelve^G1427, began asking^G2065 Him about the parables^G3850.

Mar 4:11

Mar 4:11And He was saying to them, “To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to those who are outside, everything comes in parables,

Mar 4:12

Mar 4:12so that WHILE SEEING, THEY MAY SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE, AND WHILE HEARING, THEY MAY HEAR AND NOT UNDERSTAND, LEST THEY RETURN AND BE FORGIVEN.”

The Parable of the Sower Explained

(Mat 13:18–23; Luk 8:11–15 )

Mar 4:13

And He *said^G3004 to them, “Do you not understand^G6063 this^G3778 parable^G3850? How^G4459 will you understand^G1097 all^G3956 the parables^G3850?

Mar 4:14

Mar 4:14“The sower sows the word.

Mar 4:15

Mar 4:15“And these are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown: when they hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them.

Mar 4:16

Mar 4:16“And in a similar way, these are the ones being sown on the rocky places: those who, when hearing the word, immediately receive it with joy;

Mar 4:17

Mar 4:17and they have no root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they [fn]fall away.

Mar 4:18

Mar 4:18“And others are those being sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word,

Mar 4:19

Mar 4:19but the worries of the [fn]world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for anything else enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Mar 4:20

Mar 4:20“And those are the ones which were sown on the good soil: they who hear the word and accept it and are bearing fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.”

Mar 4:21

And He was saying^G3004 to them, “Is a lamp^G3088 brought^G2064 to be put^G5087 under^G5259 a [fn]basket^G3426 or^G2228 under^G5259 a bed^G2825? Is it not to be put^G5087 on the lampstand^G3087?

Mar 4:22

Mar 4:22“For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light.

Mar 4:23

Mar 4:23“If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Mar 4:24

Mar 4:24And He was saying to them, “Beware what you listen to. [fn]By your standard of measure it will be measured to you, and more will be given to you.

Mar 4:25

Mar 4:25“For whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.”

The Parable of the Seed

Mar 4:26

And He was saying^G3004, “The kingdom^G932 of God^G2316 is like^G3779^G5613 a man^G444 who casts^G906 seed^G4703 upon the soil^G1093;

Mar 4:27

Mar 4:27and he sleeps and rises, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—how, he himself does not know.

Mar 4:28

Mar 4:28“The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head.

Mar 4:29

Mar 4:29“But when the grain [fn]is ripe, he immediately [fn]puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

(Mat 13:31, 32; Luk 13:18, 19 )

Mar 4:30

And He was saying^G3004, “How^G4459 shall we compare^G3666 the kingdom^G932 of God^G2316, or^G2228 by what^G5101 parable^G3850 shall we present^G5087 it?

Mar 4:31

Mar 4:31“It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is [fn]smallest of all the seeds that are upon the soil,

Mar 4:32

Mar 4:32yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes [fn]largest of all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that THE BIRDS OF THE [fn]AIR can NEST UNDER ITS SHADE.”

Mar 4:33

And with many^G4183 such^G5108 parables^G3850 He was speaking^G2980 the word^G3056 to them, as^G2531 they were able^G1410 to hear^G191 it;

Mar 4:34

Mar 4:34and He was not speaking to them without a parable; but He was explaining everything privately to His own disciples.

Jesus Calms a Storm

(Mat 8:23–27; Luk 8:22–25 )

Mar 4:35

And on that day^G2250, when evening^G3798 came^G1096, He *said^G3004 to them, “Let us go^G1330 over^G1330 to the other^G4008 side^G4008.”

Mar 4:36

Mar 4:36 [fn]And leaving the crowd, they *took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him.

Mar 4:37

Mar 4:37And a great windstorm *arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat so that the boat was already filling up.

Mar 4:38

Mar 4:38And Jesus Himself was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion; and they *got Him up and *said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
