Parable of the Vine-Growers

(Mat 21:33–46; Luk 20:9–19 )

And He began^G757 to speak^G2980 to them in parables^G3850: “A man^G444 PLANTED^G5452 A VINEYARD^G290 AND PUT^G4060 A [fn]WALL^G5418 AROUND^G4060 IT, AND DUG^G3736 A VAT^G5276 UNDER^G5276 THE^G5276 WINE^G5276 PRESS^G5276 AND BUILT^G3618 A TOWER^G4444, and rented^G1554 it out to [fn]vine-growers^G1092 and went^G589 on^G589 a^G589 journey^G589.

Mar 12:2

Mar 12:2“And at the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive some of the fruit of the vineyard from the vine-growers.

Mar 12:3

Mar 12:3“And they took him, and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

Mar 12:4

Mar 12:4“And again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully.

Mar 12:5

Mar 12:5“And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others.

Mar 12:6

Mar 12:6“He had one more, a beloved son; he sent him last of all to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

Mar 12:7

Mar 12:7“But those vine-growers said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’

Mar 12:8

Mar 12:8“And they took him, and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.

Mar 12:9

Mar 12:9“What will the [fn]owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vine-growers, and will give the vineyard to others.

Mar 12:10

Mar 12:10“Have you not even read this Scripture:

‘THE STONE^G3037 WHICH^G3739 THE BUILDERS^G3618 REJECTED^G593,

THIS^G3778 HAS BECOME^G1096 THE CHIEF^G2776 CORNER^G1137 stone;

Mar 12:11

THIS^G3778 CAME^G1096 ABOUT FROM THE [fn]LORD^G2962,

AND IT IS MARVELOUS^G2298 IN OUR EYES^G3788’?”

Mar 12:12

And they were seeking^G2212 to seize^G2902 Him, and yet they feared^G5399 the crowd^G3793, for they understood^G1097 that He spoke^G3004 the parable^G3850 against^G4314 them. And so they left^G863 Him and went^G565 away^G565.

Taxes to Caesar

Mar 12:13

Mar 12:14

Mar 12:14And they *came and *said to Him, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and [fn]defer to no one; for You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it [fn]lawful to pay a tax to Caesar, or not?

Mar 12:15

Mar 12:15“Shall we pay or shall we not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a [fn]denarius to look at.”

Mar 12:16

Mar 12:16And they brought one. And He *said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” And they said to Him, “Caesar’s.”

Mar 12:17

Mar 12:17And Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they [fn]were amazed at Him.

The Sadducees and the Resurrection

(Mat 22:23–33; Luk 20:27–40 )

Mar 12:18

Then^G2532 some Sadducees^G4523 (who^G3748 say^G3004 that there is no^G3361 resurrection^G386) *came^G2064 to Jesus, and began questioning^G1905 Him, saying^G3004,

Mar 12:19

Mar 12:19“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN’S BROTHER DIES and leaves behind a wife AND LEAVES NO CHILD, HIS BROTHER SHOULD [fn]MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP A SEED FOR HIS BROTHER.

Mar 12:20

Mar 12:20“There were seven brothers; and the first [fn]married a wife, and died leaving no [fn]seed.

Mar 12:21

Mar 12:21“And the second one [fn]married her, and died leaving behind no seed; and the third likewise;

Mar 12:22

Mar 12:22and so [fn]all seven left no seed. Last of all the woman died also.

Mar 12:23

Mar 12:23“In the resurrection, [fn]when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For [fn]all seven [fn]had married her.”

Mar 12:24

Mar 12:24Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not [fn]understand the Scriptures nor the power of God?

Mar 12:25

Mar 12:25“For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

Mar 12:26

Mar 12:26“But [fn]regarding the fact that the dead are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB’?

Mar 12:27

Mar 12:27“He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken.”

The Foremost Commandment

(Mat 22:34–40; Luk 10:25–28 )

Mar 12:28

And when one^G1520 of the scribes^G1122 came^G4334 and heard^G191 them arguing^G4802, he recognized^G3708 that He had answered^G611 them well^G2573 and asked^G1905 Him, “What^G4169 commandment^G1785 is the [fn]foremost^G4413 of all^G3956?”

Mar 12:29

Mar 12:29Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE [fn]LORD OUR GOD IS ONE [fn]LORD;

Mar 12:30

Mar 12:30AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE [fn]LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’

Mar 12:31

Mar 12:31“The second is this, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mar 12:32

Mar 12:32And the scribe said to Him, “Right, Teacher; You have truly stated that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM;

Mar 12:33

Mar 12:33AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE’S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

Mar 12:34

Mar 12:34And when Jesus saw that he had answered thoughtfully, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that, no one would dare to ask Him any more questions.

Mar 12:35

Mar 12:36

Mar 12:36“David himself said [fn]in the Holy Spirit,

‘THE [fn]LORD^G2962 SAID^G3004 TO MY LORD^G2962,

“SIT^G2521 AT MY RIGHT^G1188 HAND^G1188,

UNTIL^G2193 I PUT^G5087 YOUR ENEMIES^G2190 BENEATH^G5270 YOUR FEET^G4228.”’

Mar 12:37

“David^G1138 himself^G846 calls^G3004 Him ‘Lord^G2962’; so^G2532 in what^G4159 sense^G4159 is He his son^G5207?” And the large^G4183 crowd^G3793 [fn]enjoyed^G2234 listening^G191 to Him.

Mar 12:38

And in His teaching^G1322 He was saying^G3004: “Beware^G991 of the scribes^G1122 who want^G2309 to walk^G4043 around^G4043 in long^G4749 robes^G4749, and want respectful greetings^G783 in the marketplaces^G58,

Mar 12:39

Mar 12:39and best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,

Mar 12:40

Mar 12:40who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation.”

The Widow’s Offering

(Luk 21:1–4 )

Mar 12:42

Mar 12:42And a poor widow came and put in two [fn]lepta, which amount to a [fn]quadrans.

Mar 12:43And calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all those putting money into the treasury;
