The Centurion’s Faith

(Mat 8:5–13 )

When^G1894 He had completed^G4137 all^G3956 His words^G4487 in the hearing^G189 of the people^G2992, He went^G1525 to Capernaum^G2584.

Luk 7:2

And a centurion’s^G1543 slave^G1401, [fn]who^G3739 was highly^G1784 regarded^G1784 by him, was sick^G2560 and about^G3195 to^G3195 die^G5053.

Luk 7:3

Luk 7:3Now when he heard about Jesus, he sent some [fn]Jewish elders asking Him to come and [fn]save the life of his slave.

Luk 7:4

Luk 7:4And when they came to Jesus, they were earnestly pleading with Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him;

Luk 7:5

Luk 7:5for he loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue.”

Luk 7:6

Luk 7:6Now Jesus was going on His way with them; and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “[fn]Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not good enough for You to come under my roof.

Luk 7:7

Luk 7:7“For this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just [fn]say the word, and my [fn]servant will be healed.

Luk 7:8

Luk 7:8“For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”

Luk 7:9

Luk 7:9Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him. And He turned to the crowd that was following Him and said, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”

Luk 7:10

Luk 7:10And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

Luk 7:11

And^G2532 it happened^G1096 that soon^G1836 afterwards^G1722^G1836 He went^G4198 to a city^G4172 called^G2564 Nain^G3484, and His disciples^G3101 were going^G4848 along^G4848 with Him, [fn]accompanied^G2532 by a large^G4183 crowd^G3793.

Luk 7:12

Luk 7:12Now as He approached the gate of the city, behold, [fn]a dead man was being carried out, the [fn]only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a sizeable crowd from the city was with her.

Luk 7:13

Luk 7:13And when the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her and said to her, “Do not cry.”

Luk 7:14

Luk 7:14And He came up and touched the coffin, and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!”

Luk 7:15

Luk 7:15And the [fn]dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother.

Luk 7:16

Luk 7:16And fear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has [fn]visited His people!”

Luk 7:17And this report concerning Him went out all over Judea and in all the surrounding district.

Luk 7:19Summoning [fn]two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for someone else?”

Luk 7:20When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for someone else?’”

Luk 7:21

Luk 7:21At that [fn]very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and He granted sight to many who were blind.

Luk 7:22

Luk 7:22And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.

Luk 7:23

Luk 7:23“Blessed is he [fn]who does not take offense at Me.”

Luk 7:24

Luk 7:25

Luk 7:25“[fn]But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft garments? Behold, those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces!

Luk 7:26

Luk 7:26“But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and even more than a prophet.

Luk 7:27

Luk 7:27“This is the one about whom it is written,

‘BEHOLD^G2400, I SEND^G649 MY MESSENGER^G32 [fn]AHEAD^G4253 OF YOU,

WHO^G3739 WILL PREPARE^G2680 YOUR WAY^G3598 BEFORE^G1715 YOU.’

Luk 7:28

“I say^G3004 to you, among^G1722 those born^G1084 of women^G1135 there is no^G3762 one^G3762 greater^G3173 than John^G2491; yet^G1161 he who is [fn]least^G3398 in the kingdom^G932 of God^G2316 is greater^G3173 than he.”

Luk 7:29

Luk 7:29And when all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they [fn]acknowledged God’s justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John.

Luk 7:30

Luk 7:30But the Pharisees and the scholars of the Law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by [fn]John.

“To what^G5101 then^G3767 shall I compare^G3666 the men^G444 of this^G3778 generation^G1074, and what^G5101 are they like^G3664?

Luk 7:32

Luk 7:32“They are like children, sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, who say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’

Luk 7:33

Luk 7:33“For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’

Luk 7:34

Luk 7:34“The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a [fn]drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and [fn]sinners!’

Luk 7:35

Luk 7:35“Yet wisdom is vindicated [fn]by all her children.”

Luk 7:36

Now^G1161 one^G5100 of the Pharisees^G5330 was asking^G2065 Him to eat^G2068 with him, and He entered^G1525 the Pharisee’s^G5330 house^G3624 and reclined^G2625 at the table.

Luk 7:37

Luk 7:37And behold, there was a woman in the city who was a [fn]sinner. And when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.

Luk 7:38

Luk 7:38And standing behind Him at His feet, crying, she began to wet His feet with her tears. And she kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.

Luk 7:39

Luk 7:39Now when the Pharisee, who had invited Him, saw this, he said to himself, saying, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.”

Parable of Two Debtors

Luk 7:40

Luk 7:40And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he [fn]replied, “Say it, Teacher.”

Luk 7:41

Luk 7:41“A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred [fn]denarii, and the other fifty.

Luk 7:42

Luk 7:42“When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?”

Luk 7:43

Luk 7:43Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he graciously forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”

Luk 7:44

Luk 7:44And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

Luk 7:45“You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet.

Luk 7:46

Luk 7:46“You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.

Luk 7:47

Luk 7:47“For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.”

Luk 7:48

Luk 7:48Then He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.”

Luk 7:49
