Lord of the Sabbath

(Mat 12:1–8; Mar 2:23–28 )

Now^G1161 it happened^G1096 that on a Sabbath^G4521 He was passing^G1279 through^G1223 some grainfields^G4702, and His disciples^G3101 were picking^G5089 and eating^G2068 the heads^G4719 of^G4719 grain^G4719, rubbing^G5597 them in their hands^G5495.

Luk 6:2

Luk 6:2But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

Luk 6:3

Luk 6:3And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,

Luk 6:4

Luk 6:4how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [fn]consecrated bread which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?”

Luk 6:5

Luk 6:5And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Jesus Heals a Man on the Sabbath

Luk 6:6

Now it happened^G1096 that on another^G2087 Sabbath^G4521 He entered^G1525 the synagogue^G4864 and was teaching^G1321; and there was a man^G444 there^G1563 [fn]whose^G2532^G846 right^G1188 hand^G5495 was withered^G3584.

Luk 6:7

Luk 6:7And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He heals on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.

Luk 6:8

Luk 6:8But He knew [fn]what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and [fn]come forward!” And he stood up and [fn]came forward.

Luk 6:9

Luk 6:9And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?”

Luk 6:10

Luk 6:10And after looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so, and his hand was restored.

Luk 6:11

Luk 6:11But they themselves were filled with [fn]rage, and were discussing together what they might do to Jesus.

Jesus Appoints the Twelve

Luk 6:12

Luk 6:13

Luk 6:13And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:

Luk 6:14

Luk 6:14Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;

Luk 6:15

Luk 6:15and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;

Luk 6:16

Luk 6:16Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Luk 6:17

Luk 6:18

Luk 6:18who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured.

Luk 6:19

Luk 6:19And all the crowd was trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.

The Beatitudes

Luk 6:20

Luk 6:21

Luk 6:22

Blessed^G3107 are you when^G3752 men^G444 hate^G3404 you, and exclude^G873 you, and insult^G3679 you, and scorn^G1544 your name^G3686 as evil^G4190, for the sake^G6025 of the Son^G5207 of Man^G444.

Luk 6:23

“Be glad^G5463 in that day^G2250 and leap^G4640 for joy, for behold^G2400, your reward^G3408 is great^G4183 in heaven^G3772. For their fathers^G3962 were doing^G4160 the same^G846 things^G2596 to the prophets^G4396.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

Luk 6:24

“But woe^G3759 to you who are rich^G4145, for you are receiving^G568 your comfort^G3874 in full^G568.

Luk 6:25

Woe^G3759 to you who [fn]are well-fed^G1705 now^G3568, for you shall be hungry^G3983.

Woe^G3759 to you who laugh^G1070 now^G3568, for you shall mourn^G3996 and cry^G2799.

Luk 6:26

Woe^G3759 to you when^G3752 all^G3956 men^G444 speak^G3004 well^G2573 of you, for their fathers^G3962 were doing^G4160 the same^G846 things^G2596 to the false^G5578 prophets^G5578.

Love Your Enemies

Luk 6:27

Luk 6:28

Luk 6:28bless those who curse you, pray for those who disparage you.

Luk 6:29

Luk 6:29“Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your garment, do not withhold your [fn]tunic from him either.

Luk 6:30

Luk 6:30“Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.

Luk 6:32“And if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

Luk 6:34“And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.

Luk 6:35“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, [fn]expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to the ungrateful and evil.

Luk 6:36

Do Not Judge

Luk 6:37

“And do not judge^G2919, and you will not be judged^G2919; and do not condemn^G2613, and you will not be condemned^G2613; [fn]pardon^G630, and you will be [fn]pardoned^G630.

Luk 6:38

Luk 6:38“Give, and it will be given to you. They will [fn]pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”

Luk 6:39

Luk 6:40

Luk 6:40“A [fn]student is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will [fn]be like his teacher.

Luk 6:41

Luk 6:41“And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

Luk 6:42

Luk 6:42“How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

Luk 6:43

Luk 6:43“For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, [fn]on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit.

Luk 6:44

Luk 6:44“For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a bramble bush.

Luk 6:45

Luk 6:45“The good man out of the good [fn]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil. For his mouth speaks from the abundance of his heart.

Luk 6:47

Luk 6:47“Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them, I will show you whom he is like:

Luk 6:48

Luk 6:48he is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the river burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

Luk 6:49

Luk 6:49“But the one who heard and did not do accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the river burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
