The Temptation of Jesus

(Mat 4:1–11; Mar 1:12, 13 )

Now Jesus^G2424, full^G4134 of the Holy^G40 Spirit^G4151, returned^G5290 from the Jordan^G2446 and was being led^G71 around [fn]by the Spirit^G4151 in the wilderness^G2048

Luk 4:2

Luk 4:2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had finished, He was hungry.

Luk 4:3

Luk 4:3And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

Luk 4:4

Luk 4:4And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.’”

Luk 4:5

And he led^G321 Him up^G321 and showed^G1166 Him all^G3956 the kingdoms^G932 of [fn]the world^G3625 in a moment^G4743 of time^G5550.

Luk 4:6

Luk 4:6And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this [fn]dominion and [fn]its glory, for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

Luk 4:7

Luk 4:7“Therefore if You [fn]worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”

Luk 4:8

Luk 4:8And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE [fn]LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’”

Luk 4:9

And he led^G71 Him to Jerusalem^G2419 and had Him stand^G2476 on the pinnacle^G4419 of the temple^G2413, and said^G3004 to Him, “If^G1487 You are the Son^G5207 of God^G2316, throw^G906 Yourself^G4572 down^G2736 from^G1782 here^G1782,

Luk 4:10

Luk 4:10for it is written,

‘HE WILL COMMAND^G1781 HIS ANGELS^G32 CONCERNING^G4012 YOU TO GUARD^G1314 YOU,’

Luk 4:11

and,

‘ON their HANDS^G5495 THEY WILL BEAR^G142 YOU UP,

LEST^G3379 YOU STRIKE^G4350 YOUR FOOT^G4228 AGAINST^G4314 A STONE^G3037.’”

Luk 4:12

And Jesus^G2424 answered^G611 and said^G3004 to him, “It is said^G3004, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT^G1598 THE [fn]LORD^G2962 YOUR GOD^G2316 TO^G1598 THE^G1598 TEST^G1598.’”

Luk 4:13

And when the devil^G1228 had finished^G4931 every^G3956 temptation^G3986, he left^G868 Him until^G891 an opportune^G2540 time^G2540.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

(Mat 4:12–17; Mar 1:14, 15 )

Luk 4:14

And Jesus^G2424 returned^G5290 to Galilee^G1056 in the power^G1411 of the Spirit^G4151, and news^G5345 about^G4012 Him spread^G1831 through^G2596 all^G3650 the surrounding^G4066 district^G4066.

Luk 4:15

Luk 4:15And He was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

(Mat 13:54–58; Mar 6:1–6 )

Luk 4:16

And He came^G2064 to Nazareth^G3478, where^G3757 He had been^G1510 brought^G5142 up, and as was His custom^G1486, He entered^G1525 the synagogue^G4864 on the Sabbath^G4521 and stood^G450 up^G450 to read^G314.

Luk 4:17

Luk 4:17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written,

Luk 4:18

“THE SPIRIT^G4151 OF THE [fn]LORD^G2962 IS UPON ME,

BECAUSE^G3739^G6025 HE ANOINTED^G5548 ME TO PREACH^G2097 THE GOSPEL^G2097 TO THE POOR^G4434.

HE HAS SENT^G649 ME TO PROCLAIM^G2784 RELEASE^G859 TO THE CAPTIVES^G164,

AND RECOVERY^G309 OF^G309 SIGHT^G309 TO THE BLIND^G5185,

TO SET^G649 FREE^G1722^G859 THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED^G2352,

Luk 4:19

TO PROCLAIM^G2784 THE FAVORABLE^G1184 YEAR^G1763 OF THE [fn]LORD^G2962.”

Luk 4:20

And He closed^G4428 the scroll^G975, gave^G591 it back^G591 to the attendant^G5257 and sat^G2523 down^G2523, and the eyes^G3788 of all^G3956 in the synagogue^G4864 were fixed^G816 on Him.

Luk 4:21

Luk 4:21And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your [fn]hearing.”

Luk 4:22

Luk 4:22And all were [fn]speaking well of Him and marveling at the [fn]gracious words which were coming forth from His lips, and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

Luk 4:23

Luk 4:23And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard took place at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown as well.’”

Luk 4:24

Luk 4:24And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.

Luk 4:25

Luk 4:25“But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land,

Luk 4:26

Luk 4:26and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to [fn]Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

Luk 4:27

Luk 4:27“And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

Luk 4:28

Luk 4:28And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things,

Luk 4:29

Luk 4:29and they stood up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the edge of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff.

Luk 4:30

Luk 4:30But passing through their midst, He went on His way.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Demon

(Mar 1:21–28 )

Luk 4:31

And He came^G2718 down^G2718 to Capernaum^G2584, a city^G4172 of Galilee^G1056, and He was teaching^G1321 them on the Sabbath^G4521;

Luk 4:32

Luk 4:32and they were amazed at His teaching, for His [fn]message was with authority.

Luk 4:33

Luk 4:33And in the synagogue there was a man [fn]possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,

Luk 4:34

Luk 4:34“[fn]Let us alone! [fn]What do we have to do with You, Jesus the Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

Luk 4:35

Luk 4:35But Jesus rebuked it, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, it came out of him without doing him any harm.

Luk 4:36

Luk 4:36And amazement came upon them all, and they were talking with one another saying, “What is [fn]this message? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.”

Luk 4:37

Luk 4:37And the report about Him was spreading into every place in the surrounding district.

Peter’s Mother-In-Law and Many Others Healed

(Mat 8:14, 15; Mar 1:29–31 )

Luk 4:38

Then^G2532 He stood^G450 up^G450 and left the synagogue^G4864, and entered^G1525 Simon’s^G4613 home^G3614. Now^G1161 Simon’s^G4613 mother-in-law^G3994 was suffering^G4912 from a high^G3173 fever^G4446, and they asked^G2065 Him [fn]to help^G4012 her.

Luk 4:39

Luk 4:39And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she stood up and [fn]began waiting on them.

Luk 4:40

And while the sun^G2246 was setting^G1416, all^G537 those^G3745 who^G3745 had^G2192 any who were sick^G770 with various^G4164 diseases^G3554 brought^G71 them to Him, and laying^G2007 His hands^G5495 on^G2007 each^G1538 one^G1520 of them, He was healing^G2323 them.

Luk 4:41

Luk 4:41And demons also were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He was not allowing them to speak, because they knew Him to be the [fn]Christ.

Luk 4:42

When day^G2250 came^G1096, Jesus left^G1831 and went^G4198 to a secluded^G2048 place^G5117; and the crowds^G3793 were eagerly^G1934 seeking^G1934 for^G1934 Him, and came^G2064 to Him and tried to keep^G2722 Him from^G2722 going^G4198 away^G4198 from them.
