The Authority of Jesus Challenged

(Mat 21:23–27; Mar 11:27–33 )

And^G2532 it happened^G1096 that on one^G1520 of the days^G2250 while He was teaching^G1321 the people^G2992 in the temple^G2413 and proclaiming^G2097 the gospel^G2097, the chief^G749 priests^G749 and the scribes^G1122 with the elders^G4245 came^G2186 up^G2186 to Him,

Luk 20:2

Luk 20:2and they spoke, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?”

Luk 20:3

Luk 20:3And Jesus answered and said to them, “I will also ask you a [fn]question, and you tell Me:

Luk 20:4

Luk 20:4“Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?”

Luk 20:5

Luk 20:5And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’

Luk 20:6

Luk 20:6“But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”

Luk 20:7

Luk 20:7So they answered that they did not know where it came from.

Luk 20:8

Luk 20:8And Jesus said to them, “Neither [fn]will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Parable of the Vine-Growers

(Mat 21:33–46; Mar 12:1–12 )

Luk 20:9

And He began^G757 to tell^G3004 the people^G2992 this^G3778 parable^G3850: “A man^G444 planted^G5452 a vineyard^G290 and rented^G1554 it out to [fn]vine-growers^G1092, and went^G589 on^G589 a^G589 journey^G589 for a long^G2425 time^G5550.

Luk 20:10

Luk 20:10“And at the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vine-growers sent him away empty-handed having beaten him.

Luk 20:11

Luk 20:11“And he proceeded to send another slave; and when they beat him also and treated him shamefully, they sent him away empty-handed.

Luk 20:12

Luk 20:12“And he proceeded to send a third; and this one also they wounded and cast out.

Luk 20:13

Luk 20:13“Now the [fn]owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’

Luk 20:14

Luk 20:14“But when the vine-growers saw him, they were reasoning with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’

Luk 20:15

Luk 20:15“So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the [fn]owner of the vineyard do to them?

Luk 20:16

Luk 20:16“He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “May it never be!”

Luk 20:17

Luk 20:17But when [fn]Jesus looked at them, He said, “What then is this that is written:

‘THE STONE^G3037 WHICH^G3739 THE BUILDERS^G3618 REJECTED^G593,

THIS^G3778 BECAME^G1096 THE CHIEF^G2776 CORNER^G1137 stone’?

Luk 20:18

“Everyone^G3956 who falls^G4098 on that stone^G3037 will be broken^G4917 to^G4917 pieces^G4917, but on whomever^G3739^G302 it falls^G4098, it will scatter^G3039 him like^G3039 dust^G3039.”

Taxes to Caesar

Luk 20:19

And the scribes^G1122 and the chief^G749 priests^G749 tried^G2212 to lay^G1911 hands^G5495 on Him that very^G846 hour^G5610, but they feared^G5399 the people^G2992. For they understood^G1097 that He spoke^G3004 this^G3778 parable^G3850 against^G4314 them.

Luk 20:20

Luk 20:20So they watched Him, and sent spies who [fn]pretended to be righteous, so that they might [fn]catch Him in some statement, in order to deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.

Luk 20:21

Luk 20:21And they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You [fn]are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth.

Luk 20:22

Luk 20:22“Is it [fn]lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”

Luk 20:23

Luk 20:23But He perceived their craftiness and said to them,

Luk 20:24

Luk 20:24“Show Me a [fn]denarius. Whose [fn]likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.”

Luk 20:25

Luk 20:25And He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Luk 20:26

Luk 20:26And they were unable to [fn]catch Him in a word in the presence of the people; and marveling at His answer, they became silent.

The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

(Mat 22:23–33; Mar 12:18–27 )

Luk 20:27

Now^G1161 some^G5100 of the Sadducees^G4523 (who say^G483 that there is no^G3361 resurrection^G386) came^G4334 to Him,

Luk 20:28

Luk 20:28and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN’S BROTHER DIES, having a wife, AND HE IS CHILDLESS, HIS BROTHER SHOULD [fn]MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP [fn]SEED FOR HIS BROTHER.

Luk 20:29

Luk 20:29“Now there were seven brothers; and the first married a wife and died childless,

Luk 20:30

Luk 20:30and the second

Luk 20:31

Luk 20:31and the third [fn]married her; and in the same way, [fn]all seven [fn]died, leaving no children.

Luk 20:32

Luk 20:32“Finally the woman died also.

Luk 20:33

Luk 20:33“Therefore, this woman—in the resurrection—whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as a wife.”

Luk 20:34

And Jesus^G2424 said^G3004 to them, “The sons^G5207 of this^G3778 age^G165 marry^G1060 and are given^G1061 in^G1061 marriage^G1061,

Luk 20:35

Luk 20:35but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage.

Luk 20:36

Luk 20:36“For they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

Luk 20:37

Luk 20:37“But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the [fn]Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.

Luk 20:38

Luk 20:38“Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to Him.”

Luk 20:39

Luk 20:39And some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.”

Luk 20:40

Luk 20:40For they did not dare to question Him any longer about anything.

Luk 20:41

Then^G2532 He said^G3004 to them, “How^G4459 is it that they say^G3004 the [fn]Christ^G5547 is David’s^G1138 son^G5207?

Luk 20:42

Luk 20:42“For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

‘THE [fn]LORD^G2962 SAID^G3004 TO MY LORD^G2962,

“SIT^G2521 AT MY RIGHT^G1188 HAND^G1188,

Luk 20:43

UNTIL^G2193 I PUT^G5087 YOUR ENEMIES^G2190 AS A FOOTSTOOL^G5286 FOR YOUR FEET^G4228.”’

Luk 20:44

“Therefore^G3767 David^G1138 calls^G2564 Him ‘Lord^G2962,’ so how^G4459 is He his son^G5207?”

Luk 20:45

And while all^G3956 the people^G2992 were listening^G191, He said^G3004 to the disciples^G3101,

Luk 20:46“Beware of the scribes, who want to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, and best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,
