The Parable of the Unrighteous Steward

Now^G1161 He was also^G2532 saying^G3004 to the disciples^G3101, “There was a rich^G4145 man^G444 who^G3739 had^G2192 a steward^G3623, and this^G3778 steward was [fn]reported^G1225 to him as squandering^G1287 his possessions^G5225.

Luk 16:2

Luk 16:2“And he called for him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’

Luk 16:3

Luk 16:3“And the steward said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my [fn]master is taking the stewardship away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg.

Luk 16:4

Luk 16:4‘I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the stewardship people will [fn]take me into their homes.’

Luk 16:5

Luk 16:5“And he summoned each one of his [fn]master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

Luk 16:6

Luk 16:6“And he said, ‘One hundred [fn]baths of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’

Luk 16:7

Luk 16:7“Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘One hundred [fn]kors of wheat.’ He *said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’

Luk 16:8

Luk 16:8“And his [fn]master praised the unrighteous steward because he had acted shrewdly, for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own [fn]kind than the sons of light.

Luk 16:9

Luk 16:9“And I say to you, make friends for yourselves from the [fn]wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will [fn]take you into the eternal dwellings.

Luk 16:10

“He who is faithful^G4103 in a very^G1646 little^G1646 thing^G1646 is faithful^G4103 also^G2532 in much^G4183, and he who is unrighteous^G94 in a very^G1646 little^G1646 thing^G1646 is unrighteous^G94 also^G2532 in much^G4183.

Luk 16:11

Luk 16:11“Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous [fn]wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?

Luk 16:12

Luk 16:12“And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?

Luk 16:13

Luk 16:13“No [fn]servant can [fn]serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot [fn]serve God and [fn]wealth.”

Luk 16:14

Now^G1161 the Pharisees^G5330, who were lovers^G5366 of^G5366 money^G5366, were listening^G191 to all^G3956 these^G3778 things^G3778 and were scoffing^G1592 at Him.

Luk 16:15

Luk 16:15And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves [fn]in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts, for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable [fn]in the sight of God.

Luk 16:16

“The Law^G3551 and the Prophets^G4396 were until^G3360 John^G2491; [fn]since^G575 that time^G5119 the good^G2097 news^G2097 of the kingdom^G932 of God^G2316 is proclaimed^G2097, and everyone^G3956 is forcing^G971 his way^G971 into it.

Luk 16:17

Luk 16:17“But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one [fn]stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.

Luk 16:18

“Everyone^G3956 who [fn]divorces^G630 his wife^G1135 and marries^G1060 another^G2087 commits^G3431 adultery^G3431, and he who marries^G1060 a woman who is [fn]divorced^G630 from a husband^G435 commits^G3431 adultery^G3431.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

Luk 16:19

“Now^G1161 there was a rich^G4145 man^G444, and he habitually dressed^G1737 in purple^G4209 and fine^G1040 linen^G1040, joyously^G2165 living^G2165 in splendor^G2988 every^G2596 day^G2250.

Luk 16:20

Luk 16:20“But a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,

Luk 16:21

Luk 16:21and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.

Luk 16:22

Luk 16:22“Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom, and the rich man also died and was buried.

Luk 16:23

Luk 16:23“And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.

Luk 16:24

Luk 16:24“And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’

Luk 16:25

Luk 16:25“But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things. But now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.

Luk 16:26

Luk 16:26‘And [fn]besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you are not able, and none may cross over from there to us.’
