The Day of Atonement

Now Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872 after^H310 the death^H4194 of the two^H8147 sons^H1121 of Aaron^H175, when they came^H7126 near^H7126 the presence^H6440 of Yahweh^H3068 and died^H4191.

Lev 16:2

Lev 16:2And Yahweh said to Moses:

“Tell^H1696 your brother^H251 Aaron^H175 that he shall not enter^H935 at any^H3605 time^H6256 into the holy^H6944 place inside^H4480^H1004 the veil^H6532, before^H413^H6440 the [fn]mercy^H3727 seat^H3727 which^H834 is on the ark^H727, so^H3808 that he will not die^H4191; for I will appear^H7200 in the cloud^H6051 over^H5921 the mercy^H3727 seat^H3727.

Lev 16:3

Lev 16:3“Aaron shall enter the holy place with this: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.

Lev 16:4

Lev 16:4“He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and the linen undergarments shall be next to his [fn]body, and he shall be girded with the linen sash and attired with the linen turban (these are holy garments). Then he shall bathe his [fn]body in water and put them on.

Lev 16:5

Lev 16:5“And he shall take from the congregation of the sons of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.

Lev 16:6

Lev 16:6“Then Aaron shall bring near the bull for the sin offering which is for himself, that he may make atonement for himself and for his household.

Lev 16:7

Lev 16:7“And he shall take the two goats and present them before Yahweh at the doorway of the tent of meeting.

Lev 16:8

Lev 16:8“And Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats, one lot for Yahweh and the other lot for the [fn]scapegoat.

Lev 16:9

Lev 16:9“Then Aaron shall bring near the goat on which the lot for Yahweh fell, and he shall offer it as a sin offering.

Lev 16:10

Lev 16:10“But the goat on which the lot for the [fn]scapegoat fell shall be presented alive before Yahweh, to make atonement upon it, to send it out into the wilderness as the [fn]scapegoat.

Lev 16:11

“Then Aaron^H175 shall bring^H7126 near^H7126 the bull^H6499 of the sin^H2403 offering^H2403, which^H834 is for himself, and make^H3722 atonement^H3722 for himself and for his household^H1004, and he shall slaughter^H7819 the bull^H6499 of the sin^H2403 offering^H2403 which^H834 is for himself.

Lev 16:12

Lev 16:12“And he shall take a firepan full of coals of fire from upon the altar before Yahweh and [fn]two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense, and bring it inside the veil.

Lev 16:13

Lev 16:13“And he shall put the incense on the fire before Yahweh, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the ark of the testimony, so that he will not die.

Lev 16:14

Lev 16:14“Moreover, he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; also in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

Lev 16:15

“Then he shall slaughter^H7819 the goat^H5795 of the sin^H2403 offering^H2403 which^H834 is for the people^H5971 and bring^H935 its blood^H1818 inside^H413^H4480^H1004 the veil^H6532 and do^H6213 with its blood^H1818 as he did^H6213 with the blood^H1818 of the bull^H6499. And he shall sprinkle^H5137 it on the mercy^H3727 seat^H3727 and in front^H6440 of the mercy^H3727 seat^H3727.

Lev 16:16

Lev 16:16“So he shall make atonement for the holy place because of the uncleanness of the sons of Israel and because of their transgressions in regard to all their sins; and thus he shall do for the tent of meeting which abides with them in the midst of their uncleanness.

Lev 16:17

Lev 16:17“Now when he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, no one shall be in the tent of meeting until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself and for his household and for all the assembly of Israel.

Lev 16:18

Lev 16:18“Then he shall go out to the altar that is before Yahweh and make atonement for it. And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar on all sides.

Lev 16:19

Lev 16:19“With his finger he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it seven times and cleanse it and set it apart as holy from the uncleanness of the sons of Israel.

Lev 16:20

“And when he finishes^H3615 making^H3722 atonement^H3722 for the holy^H6944 place and the tent^H168 of meeting^H4150 and the altar^H4196, he shall bring^H7126 near^H7126 the live^H2416 goat^H5795.

Lev 16:21

Lev 16:21“Then Aaron shall lay both of his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the sons of Israel and all their transgressions [fn]in regard to all their sins; and he shall lay them on the head of the goat and send it out into the wilderness by the hand of a man ready to do this.

Lev 16:22

Lev 16:22“And the goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an isolated land; and he shall send out the goat in the wilderness.

Lev 16:23

“Then Aaron^H175 shall come^H935 into the tent^H168 of meeting^H4150 and take^H6584 off^H6584 the linen^H906 garments^H899 which^H834 he put^H3847 on^H3847 when he went^H935 into the holy^H6944 place and shall leave^H5117 them there^H8033.

Lev 16:24

Lev 16:24“And he shall bathe his [fn]body with water in a holy place and put on his clothes and come forth, and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people and make atonement for himself and for the people.

Lev 16:25

Lev 16:25“Then he shall offer up in smoke the fat of the sin offering on the altar.

Lev 16:26

Lev 16:26“And the one who sent the goat out as the [fn]scapegoat shall wash his clothes and bathe his [fn]body with water; then afterward he shall come into the camp.

Lev 16:27

Lev 16:27“But the bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be taken outside the camp, and they shall burn their hides, their flesh, and their refuse in the fire.

Lev 16:28

Lev 16:28“Then the one who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body with water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.

Lev 16:29

“And this shall be a perpetual^H5769 statute^H2708 for you: in the seventh^H7637 month^H2320, on the tenth^H6218 day of the month^H2320, you shall humble^H6031 your souls^H5315 and not do^H6213 any^H3605 work^H4399, whether the native^H249 or the sojourner^H1616 who sojourns^H1481 among^H8432 you;

Lev 16:30

Lev 16:30for it is on this day that [fn]atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; you will be clean from all your sins before Yahweh.

Lev 16:31

Lev 16:31“It is to be a sabbath of solemn rest for you, that you may humble your souls; it is a perpetual statute.

Lev 16:32

Lev 16:32“So the priest who is anointed and [fn]ordained to minister as a priest in his father’s place shall make atonement: he shall thus put on the linen garments, the holy garments,

Lev 16:33

Lev 16:33and make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar. He shall also make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.

Lev 16:34

Lev 16:34“Now you shall have this as a perpetual statute, to make atonement for the sons of Israel for all their sins once every year.” And just as Yahweh had commanded Moses, so he did.
