Memorial Stones from the Jordan

Now it happened when^H834 all^H3605 the nation^H1471 had completed^H8552 crossing^H5674 the Jordan^H3383, that Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H559 to Joshua^H3091, saying^H559,

Jos 4:2

Jos 4:2“Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe,

Jos 4:3

Jos 4:3and command them, saying, ‘Carry for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet are standing firm, and carry them over with you and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge tonight.’”

Jos 4:4

Jos 4:4So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe;

Jos 4:5

Jos 4:5and Joshua said to them, “[fn]Cross again before the ark of Yahweh your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you carry a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel,

Jos 4:6

Jos 4:6in order that this would be a sign among you, so that when your children ask [fn]later, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’

Jos 4:7

Jos 4:7then you shall say to them, ‘Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.’ So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.”

Jos 4:8

Thus^H3651 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 did^H6213 as Joshua^H3091 commanded^H6680 and carried^H5375 twelve^H8147^H6240 stones^H68 from the middle^H8432 of the Jordan^H3383, just^H834 as Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Joshua^H3091, according to the number^H4557 of the tribes^H7626 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478; and they carried^H5674 them over^H5674 with them to the lodging^H4411 place^H4411 and laid^H5117 them down^H5117 there^H8033.

Jos 4:9

Jos 4:9But Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing, and they are there to this day.

Jos 4:10

Jos 4:11

Jos 4:11And it happened when all the people had completed crossing, that the ark of Yahweh and the priests crossed before the people.

Jos 4:12

Jos 4:12And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over in battle array before the sons of Israel, just as Moses had spoken to them;

Jos 4:13

Jos 4:13about 40,000 equipped for war crossed for battle before Yahweh to the desert plains of Jericho.

Jos 4:14

On that day^H3117, Yahweh^H3068 magnified^H1431 Joshua^H3091 in the sight^H5869 of all^H3605 Israel^H3478, so that they [fn]feared^H3372 him, just^H834 as they had [fn]feared^H3372 Moses^H4872 all^H3605 the days^H3117 of his life^H2416.

Jos 4:15

Then Yahweh^H3068 said^H559 to [fn]Joshua^H3091,

Jos 4:16

Jos 4:16“Command the priests who carry the ark of the testimony that they come up from the Jordan.”

Jos 4:17

Jos 4:17So Joshua commanded the priests, saying, “Come up from the Jordan.”

Jos 4:18

Jos 4:18So it happened when the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh had come up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were [fn]lifted up to the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and went over all its banks as before.

Jos 4:19

Now the people^H5971 came^H5927 up^H5927 from the Jordan^H3383 on the tenth^H6218 of the first^H7223 month^H2320 and camped^H2583 at Gilgal^H1537 on the eastern^H4217 edge^H7097 of Jericho^H3405.

Jos 4:20

Jos 4:20 [fn]And those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal.

Jos 4:21

Jos 4:21Then he said to the sons of [fn]Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean?’

Jos 4:22

Jos 4:22then you shall make your children know, saying, ‘Israel crossed this Jordan on dry land.’

Jos 4:23

Jos 4:23“For Yahweh your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as Yahweh your God had done to the [fn]Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed,
